HI!

I've been a "@hardcore" Debian fan! I've used it about 5 years. Never had windozee installed (except thru vmware or qemu). Recently installed gentoo on my 2 laptops and server machine (servin' 32 win clients) and I was amazed: so much fine tuning, control, optimization. forum support, wiki, etc, etc, ....

YES! IT'S MY MAIN DISTRO !!!

I started on gentoo one night 3+ years ago because I felt like installing a new distro rather than writing a paper that was due the next day. At least I've made one good decision in my life...

desktop: pure gentoo
server: pure gentoo
laptop: gentoo mostly, freebsd second, vista for games and making sure my code will work on multiple platforms

Gentoo has been my main for 4 years now.

At work (I am a computational physicist) I used to administer two Rocks Linux supercomputers, a Fedora server + 40 desktops (2004-2006). Now I am using SUSE at work (moved to Germany recently after getting my PhD). In addition, I have 4 Fedora boxes around at relatives' + 1 Gentoo server and a few Ubuntu machines here and there etc., BUT for me and my family - we have only Gentoo on our machines (2 laptops currently).

To be honest, there is also a Win XP partition on our HP Compaq nx9420, but we've only booted into it once (the day I bought the piece). It's btw. remarkably difficult to find a laptop nowadays without Windows Vista (excuse me for cursing in public).

[EDIT: corrected a stupid typo claiming incorrect things.]

I started using Linux in January (Ubuntu for a couple of weeks, then Gentoo). Before that I was using Windows 2003 x64.

Now I'm Gentoo-total. It's my main and only OS.

Right now I am using Gentoo as my desktop OS at work, supporting a small non-profit agency consisting of about 160 users. I still have a windows box in a cubicle somewhere in the office building that I remote into for email (Exchange) but I am working on getting Evolution configured.

Gentoo allows me to handle a lot of network troubleshooting and since I am using it as my primary OS for 8 hours a day, which is much longer than I used it at home, I am learning more and more and that is a big bonus!!!

Just converted all my systems from Ubuntu over to Gentoo. The biggest reason was Portage :)

I run Gentoo because it drives all the ladies wild. They see that emerge output scroll by, and the clothes just start flying off.

Occasionally, I have to shout, "Grandma, that is just wrong! Pull those Depends back up!"

But such is the life of a Gentoo Pimp.

I've tried to get into Debian a couple of times but with the limitted support it's an up hill struggle. Once you get used to the support of the Gentoo community and the wealth of info in the fora it's hard to go back to researching everything and working it out for yourself. (And frankly a huge waste of time.)

I've been exclusively Gentoo for 4 or 5 yrs now. I just have a Suse boot to support a freind in the UK and a win2k for checking software and web design occasionally.

I've been using Gentoo as my main server OS of choice for a few years. I don't get the gripes I've seen lately, on Digg mainly, concerning Gentoo. I've heard people griping about portage being crap, poor GUI install, and compiling in general. I don't understand were these statements even come from. Inexperience maybe? Maybe they are installing unsupported software? Either way, I update both Gentoo servers weekly and never have any problems. Compiling and the lack of GUI are actually pluses in my book.

I do occasionally have to play with the Gentoo as my desktop. Beryl* rocks. Anymore though I find myself using a MS desktop and letting Gentoo handle most of my server needs. Mainly because I don't play as often as I work.

Current setup:
FreeBSD: DNS and OpenVPN
Gentoo 1: File server in W3k environment.
Gentoo 2: Web development and subversion.
Fedora Core: Jabber and email.
My desktop: Vista
everyone else: XP Pro

I'm using gentoo everytime I can avoid Windows XP.
If I'm in Windows and want to play Warcraft 3 I switch to linux just to be able to play it under Wine :D
I'll remove Windows complety when the Linux ATI driver will improve and Wine will be able to run my favorite games for LAN parties.
But the most important thing is I will never use Vista!

Gentoo's my only OS, well I have OS X locked up in a cupboard, somewhere, collecting dust. If I were to try another Linux distro, I'd throw away a ton of modifications. The frustrating part about Gentoo in the beginning is it comes raw, all the customizations and modifications you see in other distros, you won't see in Gentoo. The good news is that after you have taken the time to make these modifications the OS it provides a better foundation.

It used to be really easy to justify Gentoo as my choice to colleagues and friends. However it's becoming increasingly difficult now , rather than doing something productive I'm spending time fixing problems and searching for solutions on forums.

It's not a unique problem to Gentoo , but it seems to have become more of an issue of late.

In saying that I can only imagine how much of an effort it is too continually monitor and fix packages and issues. So some issues aside , Gentoo suits my needs.
