PostPosted: Mon Aug 15, 2005 4:03 am    Post subject: Can't start screem, even after gconf SIGHUP [solved] Reply with quote

Dear all,

I'v emerged screem without problem but I can't start it, even after having sent a SIGHUP to gconf (nor after having eloged to gdm, nor after system reboot). It shows only the 'unable to locate one file' message with the tip that gconf should be restarted.

I don't know a lot about gnome. but I checked at some places:
1) /etc/gconf/schemas/screem/screem.schema exist and have pertinent xml content.
2) But in gconf-editor (as a user), screem dir and keys doesn't exist under /schema/apps tree
3) Furthermore in gconf-editor, /apps/screem/general shows only one key: glade_path
with value of "/usr/share/screem/glade//screem.glade" (yes, a double slash)
and key documentation area says "this key has no schema"
4) I can't find any 'gconf-sanity-check-2' application to check the registry accordingly
gnome.org/projects/gconf

Do someone know a way to refine diagnostic or workaround this issue ?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Kindest regards
bib

The ebuild appears to incorrectly install screem in that it doesn't register the gconf schemas after installing, the message about logging out given when the ebuild finishes is in fact wrong as well. as simple "gconftool-2 --shutdown" does the job.

To get the schema registered as root run:

GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE="xml::/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /etc/gconf/schemeas/screem.schemas

and screem should start up.

i tried that method and all i got was

Resolved address "xml::/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a writable configuration source at position 0
I/O warning : failed to load external entity "/etc/gconf/schemeas/screem.schemas"
Failed to open `/etc/gconf/schemeas/screem.schemas': No such file or directory

and yes the file does exist, anyone know how i can fix this ??

There is a typo in davek's command. The command should be:

Code:
GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE="xml::/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /etc/gconf/schemas/screem.schemas

schemeas -> schemas

After that, kill gconfd-2 and start screem. It should work.
