i've tried:
- using 2 different Live CD's (install-amd64-minimal-2005.0.iso and livecd64-ahorn5.iso, both with 2.6.11 kernels)
- using installed on other disc slackware current with 2.6.12.2 kernel
- using different filesystems (ReiserFS 3.6 and 4.0)
- simpler flags such as "-O0 -march=k8"
- simpler features, like disabling sandbox
- setting /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space to 0 (compiler crashed earlier, many many registers printed on the screen
i've checked
- swap (active 1GB, but not even hitted once such i have 1GB ram)
- hardware seems to be fine. i've ran memtest86, no errors.
- /dev and /proc are binded (/dev is for raid md* devices)
- md5 checksums
- temperatures: 35 Celsius on CPU under heavy load (watercooled). good memory and disks cooling. chipset temp is around 40 deg.

Does the segfault always happen at exactly the same place? |

Run memtest to check for memory errors, and tweak memory settings. DFI NF4 boards are very sensative to memory settings. I was having the same problem, and it was the ram. |

Yes, it looks to do it at the same place for me. It seems that everyone who's having this problem is on dual opterons. |

I'm having the same problem with an Athlon 64 3200. I'm trying to bootstrap, but either gcc or glibc will fail. I've been able to get farther along the process by modifying use flags or using a stage 2 tarball, but it's just avoiding the problem. See my comments in this thread. |

I can't complile gcc on my Athon-XP or my Athlon system. Both use the hardened 2.6 toolchain. The excact error is (on the old Athlon):
Code: | /var/tmp/portage/glibc-2.3.5-r1/work/build-default-i686-pc-linux-gnu-linuxthreads/csu/crtn.o(.init+0xf):/var/tmp/portage/glibc-2.3.5-r1/work/build-default-i686-pc-linux-gnu-linuxthreads/csu/crtn.S:15: undefined reference to `.LC2'

I have a two identical dual opteron (amd64) systems working with:
sys-libs/glibc-2.3.5
sys-devel/gcc-3.4.3-r1
I updated portage and I cannot "emerge --update system":
sys-libs/glibc-2.3.5-r1
sys-devel/gcc-3.4.4-r1
Glibc's compilation always fails, but I couldn't reproduce the error, since the error occurred at different places in each machine. In one of the machines, the error happened at:
/var/tmp/portage/glibc-2.3.5-r1/work/build-x86-x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-nptl/locale/lc-ctype.os
In the other, the error happened at:
/var/tmp/portage/glibc-2.3.5-r1/work/build-x86-x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-nptl/elf/dl-misc.o
I am using the +nptl and +nptlonly USE flags and a 2.6.12-gentoo-r4 kernel. |

I have deleted all glibc* files in /usr/portage/distfiles and retried to emerge glibc. The compilation went now like a breeze with no errors at all, on both machines. Maybe an error when wget tried to fetch the sources? But md5sum should have noticed that.. Maybe downloading from a not correctly-synchronized mirror? Anyway, both systems up and running |

I had a similar problem with my gcc compile during install followed by system instability later and it turned out I had to back my ram timings off to 3-3-3-8 (from 2.5-2-2-7). I have ocz memory on a dfi lanparty board. Several other people had the same problem with similar hardware but still got clean memtest results (see this thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-358266-highlight-gcc+dfi.html ). Since changing my ram timings my system's been very stable.
Hope this helps,
Steve |

as an addendum:
2.5-2-2-7 was the default value on my motherboard and didn't work (2-2-2-7 is OCZ spec and the system wouldn't even post).
I also jumped the ram voltage from 2.6V (default) to 2.8V.
