A couple of weeks ago I also took the plunge and installed Gentoo. I've been a loyal SuSE user for years (since 6.0) and have installed and used redhat, 'drake and debian too, but this was my first experiment with a source based distribution.
It took most of a week, on and off, to emerge system, KDE3.1 and the major apps I use all the time (gimp, OOo, Moz). I was extremely impressed with the accuracy and detail of the documentation and the amount of information available to answer questions along the way. Localisation for British English needed a little experimentation, but even the major distros are weak on this.
I stuck to stable packages and used middle-of-the-road optimisation settings for my PIII. I like to have the latest apps and ultimate performance, but not at the expense of reasonable stability. So far I'm nothing other than impressed.
A big thanks to one and all. |
