First of all, getdelta is the best thing since sliced bread! I've been able to downgrade to an affordable internet plan thanks to this.

But now I'm getting the same problem - I've had it for a couple of days. If it at all helps, I noticed that when I go to linux01.gwdg.de/~nlissne I also get the 403 forbidden error on the web.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Maybe Mr Getdelta is away on holidays and his server is broken then ;)

Hopefully the great service is not to be discontinued.

I've used this utility with great success. Owning a sloooooow connection it has helped my move from SuSE to Gentoo.

If things are not working perhaps the server was hacked or even suffered a disk failure?

In any event even as a beta it is a great application.

This is not looking good. There's a 403 error also at http://www.ddeltup.org. I hope this doesn't mean deltup is gone for good.

I just asked in the IRC-Channel (#dynamic-deltup-server on freenode)

The answer is: they are working on it. Something broke on apache1 -> apache2. And the dynamic-deltup-server is not going to be discontinued.

The topic in the channel usually tells if the server works.

Thanks so much to the Deltup team for maintaining this essential service - I'd be broke with download fees without it!

It has been sometime since I had any sort of resposnse from a developer, but searches suggest to me that part of the problem is due to Apache.
Originally the switch to using bdelta caused loss of all the old dtu files, I think, but it appears the change to Apache2 is the problem.

I have a very slooooooooooooooooooooooow dialup and deltup saved me an incredible amount of time. Downloading kernel source code, gcc and xorg went so nice (sigh) that upgrading was no big deal. downloading after my sync of the other day is back to the very painful... kernel 2.6.16-r6 has taken about 4 hours.

I susepct another problem may be availability of broadband for more and more of the people, who make things work. There is no longer the necessity to find ways to save bandwidth for many of them. I can not say I blame them, but this person can not afford dsl or cable modem due the economy. Heck, I may not be able to afford a roof over my head.

Still I have appreciated their efforts. They enabled me to get a working Gentoo box, two actually, and the move to Gentoo gave me more than I ever had with SuSE.

EDIT: I did an emerge --sync the other day. As usual due to my slow connection I had to do it twice, but I note that deltup is working in far more packages than in recent weeks. I'm beginning to think the problem is simply overloaded servers. Gimp would nto run last evening, but less than 24 hours later deltup worked.
I'm encouraged. I only wish I had resources to run another server.

Any way that is my latest with deltup and I thank the developers.

Thanks.

PostPosted: Fri Jun 02, 2006 12:31 pm    Post subject: Clue on Deltup Reply with quote

I did a sync late last night. I awoke early to find cache update complete so I tried fetching system updates. Of oucrse the first was to upgrade Portage to 2.0.54-r2, which choked due to some file not having been included during the sync.

I re-ran and sync went quite fast so I installed the Portage upgrade. To my horor several system packages are required that are huge.
I recently did a gcc and it was one that was required. This brings me back to deltup.

I did some poking and founda couple of things. It appears the original developer is now no longer using Gentoo. I had missed this fact.

I tried doing a manula patch with no success. I'll look at this again when I have more time, but then I tried running deltup by the usaula method.

I'm begining to think that the only problem with Deltup is that a lot of folks are using it. As there must ba a lot of AMD64 s
those of us employment challenged and thus living with our 32-bit processors are now the ones taking a back seat.

To back this up I edited my getdelta.rc to increase the allowed que position due to a message during a fetch. I also altered the que time. I'm located in the Northeast U.S. and grab gcc-3.4.6.tar.bz2 without downloading the full file dictates a pos. 1177. I set my limit at 2000 and a time of 15 minutes. I may move this up as even a half hour would be better than three hours at my dialup speed.
I'm still waiting, which is a good sign. (Who would have eber thought that would be a good sign!?) ;-)

I may be the last to have discovered this fact, but perhaps it will be helpful for all of us, who need this application. Perhpas it will save more bandwidth.

Cheers

I tried increasing queue position and timeout etc but my spot in queue remains static.

I have a semi solution however. You can check deltup site manually and download any needed dtus that may be cached.
For instance gcc-3.4.5.tar.bz2-gcc-3.4.6.tar.bz2.dtu eventually showed up. So cd to your distfiles dir, use wget to download the dtu then run deltup -p gcc-3.4.5.tar.bz2-gcc-3.4.6.tar.bz2.dtu. This will create gcc-3.4.6.tar.bz2 after which you can run emerge as normal. Make sure you dont have any incomplete gcc-3.4.6.tar.bz2 in yer distfiles dir or it will exit with 'patch already applied'

I've noticed with the getdelta script that it will ignore all but the most recent tar. For instance upgrading firefox:

We have following candidates to choose from
firefox-1.0.6-source.tar.bz2
firefox-1.0.7-source.tar.bz2
firefox-1.0.8-source.tar.bz2

The best of all is ... firefox-1.0.8-source.tar.bz2

Now i checked the server manually and it had firefox-1.0.7-source.tar.bz2-firefox-1.5.0.4-source.tar.bz2.dtu which would save me 24-25mb download but because the script couldn't find firefox-1.0.8-1.5.0.4 it failed and started downloading the full source. Deleting firefox-1.0.8-source.tar.bz2 and running emerge again did the trick.

Anyway the dtus' don't seem to remain very long on the server probably due to space issues. Also dtu creation doesn't seem to be dynamic anymore. I reckon they're created based on number of hits now possibly on some set interval.

I've kept the following dtu's and can upload them somewhere if people want to try it. Maybe we could create some sort of dtu mirror and ease the pain a bit ;)

firefox-1.0.7-source.tar.bz2-firefox-1.0.8-source.tar.bz2.dtu
firefox-1.0.7-source.tar.bz2-firefox-1.5.0.4-source.tar.bz2.dtu
gcc-3.4.5.tar.bz2-gcc-3.4.6.tar.bz2.dtu 1.2mb
kdeartwork-3.4.1.tar.bz2-kdeartwork-3.5.2.tar.bz2.dtu
kdebase-3.4.3.tar.bz2-kdebase-3.5.2.tar.bz2.dtu
kdebase-3.5.2.tar.bz2-kdebase-3.5.3.tar.bz2.dtu
kdelibs-3.5.2.tar.bz2-kdelibs-3.5.3.tar.bz2.dtu
kdenetwork-3.4.3.tar.bz2-kdenetwork-3.5.2.tar.bz2.dtu
linux-2.6.15.tar.bz2-linux-2.6.16.tar.bz2.dtu

I have checked, but it never crossed my mind to do as you suggest! It's a great idea.

Your observation on the dynamic server is also very usefull information. Thanks!

I emailed a list of files, with URL I need to upgrade, to a friend, who has access to a T1 Line. I do like your suggestion as I prefer to not rely on
anyone else for my src code.

Thanks again for the great suggestion. It means that we may have to work a little more for our updates, but we will be faster,

Cheers!
