You can try to change the ebuild for the application group you want.
For example, lets say you don't want kaboodle to build with kdemultimedia's ebuild to can modify
usr/portage/kde-base/kdemultimedia/kdemultimedia-3.0.1.ebuild
and modify the line saying:
myconf="$myconf --enable-xaw --enable-ncurses"
to
myconf="$myconf --enable-xaw --enable-ncurses --without-kaboodle"
Also when emerging kde, don't do emerge kde. emerge only what you need.
If you've already emreged everything, unmerge the unneeded ebuilds. select from:
kdeadmin
kdebindings
kdegraphics
kdenetwork
kdetoys
kdeartwork
kdeedu
kdepim
kdeutils
kdeaddons
kdegames
kdemultimedia
kdesdk
I think arts kdelibs and kdebase are required (If you use another window manager and don't want the desktop environment, only want the apps, you can let kdebase go as well) _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

ok that sounds logical,
but if I install say, kde multimedia - won't it resolve the dependencies for me, and install the whole lot of kde ?
I'll be doing a fresh install soon, and when I do I'll try this method.
Any particular order you think I should go with ? ovbiously kde_base first
i guess I can do a --pretend command and see
ta.. any other suggestions ? |

No kde various modules depend on arts and kdelibs (kde wise I mean, other dependencies include other libs/programs, e.g: if you build kooka - the kde scanner you'll need SANE as well).

The order should be: arts first kdelibs second and then anything else you want. If you want kdeaddons emerge it the last. You can refer http://kde.org/anoncvs.html - buliding KDE from cvs source, for more details. _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

You can browse kde's cvs tree at http://webcvs.kde.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/ to get an idea of the subdirectores each module contains.
