I sincerely hope that you're right. However there are already examples of companies who have decided not to port to linux or even cancelled an intended port because of wine/winex
One of my favourite games is Championship manager. CM4 has recently been released and I have searched the internet in the desperate hope that I might be able to run it natively on linux - I found that the official line regarding linux is "CM4 should run in linux under wine" they then go on to say that it is not supported.
Obviously the company is aware of linux users to have included this statement, but they have decided not to port the game because of wine/winex and therefore linux loses one more excellent game.
I could, I'm sure, find plenty more examples of the same kind of thing or similar. WineX is good for linux games in the short term, but I believe it will ultimately limit native ports on linux.
Until of course linux becomes the major desktop OS! |

bleh, I tried Wine/Winex and hated it... I go with either native linux or ported, but nothing else... I do love my ut2003 port, unreal tournament goty port, descent3 port, descent1 port, and Serious Sam2 port... oh, and then there's TORCS:D... personally, I think these are the only games I'll ever need, but I agree that we need to get the ball going with linux gaming... I would PAY good money for native linux games... to be honest, I will only buy a game if it has known Linux support for it... I guess I could be labeled a zealot? I'm sorry, but I just get a sick pit in my stomach everytime I support M$ in any shape or fashion... _________________ only the paranoid survive |

And that's exactly why a Linux advocacy group is needed, to increase developer awareness of the Linux market.

for the record..
i'm a gamer.. and a windows user transitioning to linux..
i'm not going to go into detail why this moment.. as there's too many little reasons..
the point is.. i want to help.. because when i'm done switching over.. guildwars should be coming out.. and damnit.. i'm gonna want to play it
so.. at the moment.. i can't offer much..
i'm not familiar with php.. sql.. or anything like that.. but i'm relatively decent with generic html
i don't have resources at my disposal to host a site unless noone minds it on a crappy 128k upstream adsl connection..
what i can offer.. is motivation.. time.. and the willingness to learn whatever's necessary..
so whomever is in charge.. or taking charge.. please contact me and let me know what you want me to get working on..

Is X actually required for full screen games?
If not then Linux has a great platform to advocate game usage.
Linux has fine control over what is running and if it can be repeatedly shown that Linux will out perform the same windows based machine, people will get interested.
The figures I have seen for UT2004 show windows outperforming Linux, but the nitty gritty was not shown.
UT2004 is also a port from Windows to Linux and there are some patches which help out as well.
Those few extra FPS can me the difference of fraging or being fraged.
SDL and Open GL are the keys to game adoption, earlier versions of DirectX are often maligned by those in the industry but it has been getting better unfortunately. |
