Hi there

Ok i have the very latest ati-drivers [ ati-drivers-8.14.13-r1] and X.org version 6.8.2-r2 with kernel (gentoo sources 2.6.12-r6)

I havent been able to get the unmasked ati drivers compiled so through recommendations on the forum i have used the masked version.

Module loads fine, but when i start X, i get:

Code:
[fglrx:firegl_unlock] *ERROR* Process 26210 using kernel context 0

from dmesg

lspci reads:

# is used alone.

Section "ServerLayout"

# The Identifier line must be present

# Each Screen line specifies a Screen section name, and optionally
# the relative position of other screens.  The four names after
# primary screen name are the screens to the top, bottom, left and right
# of the primary screen.

# Each InputDevice line specifies an InputDevice section name and
# optionally some options to specify the way the device is to be

and finally, the output from fgl_glxgears:

Code:

Code:
(EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work

That's the problem. It means an old fglrx module is loaded but you have a new driver version installed. For example, if you upgrade from 8.12.10 to 8.14.13 without unloading the 8.12.10 fglrx module, you'll get this error, because the driver is expecting to find a module with version 8.14.13 and instead finds 8.12.10. To fix it, you can either unload and reload the fglrx module with "rmmod fglrx && modprobe fglrx" or just reboot.

Maybe you didn't update your kernel symlink, and then re-emerge the ati-drivers. That's the only thing I can think of.

/usr/src/linux should be a symlink to /usr/src/linux-2.x.y-sources

Also check your "dmesg" output for errors from the fglrx module. If nothing else works try removing the drivers completely (unload the module then run "emerge -C ati-drivers") and emerging them again.

ive already told you what dmesg said:

Code:
[fglrx:firegl_unlock] *ERROR* Process 26210 using kernel context 0

and the process number carries on changing.

the driver is loaded fine.. i just dont understand what is going on..

Did you try removing the driver and reinstalling? Are there any errors/warnings displayed by the ebuild when you emerge the driver?

i have uninstalled and reinstalled.

they fail to compile when using below 8.14.13 but when i use that version and above then it compiles fine without complaints.

i have tried all the ati-drivers versions and have come to this conclusion above.

any more ideas guys?

cheers and thanks for all the input

What about trying a slightly earlier version of gentoo-sources (eg 2.6.12-r4)?
