Hi there !
I'm going to buy a new laptop , and I realy like the Aspire 5024.
Since I'm a only-gentoo-user I'm wondering if all the hardware is supported.
the hardware :
Quote: | Aspire 5024WLMi, AMD Turion 64 ML-34 processor (1MB L2 cache, 1.8 GHz, 400MHz), Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition SP2, 15.4TFT WXGA Acer CrystalBrite, 512MB RAM (2x256), 80GB HDD, DVD Dual double layer (slot), LiIon, 56K modem, Wired Gigabit Lan & Wireless 802.11b/g, no FDD, 128MB ATI X700, 6-in-1 card reader, AZB |
So I'm not worried about the cpu , I'm sure linux will support it, also I assume the ATI mobo will do fine (correct me if I'm wrong)
I'm not sure about the wlan , but I was able to fix an older wlancard on my (now broken) other laptop so if the internal wlancard refuses to work I can always use ndiswrapper to install my other card, right ?
What about the card reader , does anyone have this ?
If someone has the aspire 5024WLMi , please post you're opinion about this laptop.
Thx for the replies !!!

for the wlan: if its a centrino chipset, the new ones don't work. [edit]i believe ndiswrapper works if you get 64bit windows drivers. don't know if those exist for either the centrino or your pcmcia card
for the vcard: ati works, but from what i hear and in some of my limited experiences with ati cards in 64bit linux, its not so great if you want to game but ymmv. i always say stick with nvidia because it just doesn't seem like ati can quite keep up when it comes to linux.
other than that you shouldn't have a problem with any of the other features, and i'm sure the ati card will work, just not as well as an nvidia chip would.
you may also want to check out the review of an acer laptop thats pretty linux compatible for a feature comparison over at newsforge, i can't find the link right now but head over to www.newsforge.com, its there towards the top somewhere. |

See the posts I made to my blog about the battery. I have an Acer Ferrari 4005 I just bought, and needed to use a custom DSDT file but I provided links to where I got all the info there. See my blog post for all the gory details - I put a few photos of it in another post. Works great for me, and I am working on batteries right now! Says I have 28%, approx 38 minutes left.
The only thing I haven't really mastered is the bluetooth mouse - got it working but not automatically connecting. The wireless works just great and the screen is working great. The newer ati-drivers-8.16.20-r1 seems to work much better than the previous versions did for me here. |

I just use klaptopdaemon that is part of KDE. Works just great here but I think there may be others - you can always check out kde-apps.org. |

It looks like the ATI chipset timer bug should be fixed in 2.6.15 hopefully - please see http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3927 for more information. It has been a long time in the fixing, anyone who can test the patch and give feedback? |

Cryos, do you have working suspend-to-ram too? |

No - I haven't started messing with that. I understand the ATI binary drivers won't work with suspend, but haven't tried anything with regards to that yet. Suspend to RAM is the hardest to get to work (very hardware dependent), whereas suspend to disk is supposed to be easier. If the hardware manufacturers would stop using MS tools and try conforming to standards it might be a little easier... |

My 5021 won't suspend to anything. Or rather, it suspends to disk just fine with Suspend2 patched vanilla kernel, but hangs when trying to resume. Not sure if it's actually a real crash or just the keyboard that stops working tho...
Anyways, append "ec_burst=1" to kernel parameters and battery monitoring will work. Does for me anyways, will all the sources I've tried. |

Hi,
I just bought Acer Aspire 5024 wlmi. As I read on this thraed, most of the hardware is supported. Also, according to www.linux-on-laptops.com most things should work. However, it also says that it could be some problems with Card Reader and IRDA. Here is the /usr/bin/lspci output from Mandriva 2005LE:

Now, I'm really worried about this Texas Instruments Card Reader. Anyone with similar hardware? Any help would be great!
Thanks |

I have a 5022WMLi and it works (more or less :p).
To solve the speed problem, is followed the indications and use no_timer_check.
To use the wifi card, I use the acer_acpi (http://www.archernar.co.uk/acer_acpi/acer_acpi_main.html), and ndiswrapper (with the 64bit windows driver for the broadcom card).
Maybe I will test the patch for 2.6.15rc2 ... |

Thank you people very much, the great news is that there is a Broadcom driver for Linux even in unstable version. Also thanks for the speed hint, I'll sure try that.
Have you tried IRDA or Card Reader? For the rest of the hardware I'm quite sure it is possible to set it up to work under any Linux distro, these are the only two pieces of hardware I don't have enough informaton on. If anyone has a working IRDA or Card Reader, please help |

Don't know about the irda and i dont use the card reader but on http://www.webcon.ca/~imorgan/tifm21/ there is a binary module (kernel2.6.11) from texas instruments and also a developping module but it still doesn't work (i think i will contribute to it). |

To read the card in the cardbus with lspci you have to add to grube:
with all other distro it function.. with gentoo i haven't tried yet. |

guys, do you have something like dead keyboard during system start? after I hit enter in grub and my system is starting my keyboard is dead till I press any button (it has no action). It's annoying because I have set special keys in my local script and now if I'm not press any button during the system start local sript shows errors and special keys doesn't work (when I hit any key during the start, local is ok, my keyboard is active).
If you don't understand what I'm writing I give you example:
my system starts, I don't touch the kayboard. local script shows errors, it's time to login. I hit first letter from my login name - nothing happen. I hit another - it shows.
about IrDA I've tried to test it using obexftp and my sonyericsson k700 phone and it doesn't work (work on my desktop 32-bit system) _________________ http://amarok.org.pl | http://koffice.org.pl | http://kde.org.pl |

Have you tried to disable USB-legacy support in BIOS? That solved a few keyboard problems for me.
