What is Portage?

Hello people... I am new to Gentoo... "Portage" is a new term for me. Can somebody explain to me in laymen's term, what Portage is? Thanks a lot.[/b]

Portage is the package management system for Gentoo Linux. It is analogous to the rpm system in redhat and apt system in Debian. It is based on the ports system from BSD. You may want to read some of the Gentoo Documentation to find out more.
