The latest freetype works well with xmms, mplayer for me.

Quote:
[phoenix][/home/jcp]$ X -version

X Window System Version 6.8.2
Release Date: 9 February 2005
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.8.2
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.12-ck3 i686 [ELF]
Current Operating System: Linux phoenix 2.6.12.2 #1 Fri Jul 8 14:52:30 CEST 2005 i686
Build Date: 07 July 2005
Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.X.Org
to make sure that you have the latest version.
Module Loader present
[phoenix][/home/jcp]$ emerge -pv freetype mplayer xmms

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] media-libs/freetype-2.1.10 -bindist -doc +zlib 0 kB
[ebuild R ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre7 -3dfx +3dnow -3dnowext +X -aac +aalib +alsa (-altivec) +arts -bidi -bl +cdparanoia -cpudetection -custom-cflags -debug +dga -directfb +divx4linux -doc +dts -dv -dvb +dvd +dvdread -edl +encode +esd +fbcon -ggi +gif +gtk -i8x0 +ipv6 -jack +joystick +jpeg +libcaca +lirc +live +lzo +mad +matroska -matrox +mmx +mmxext -mythtv -nas +nls -nvidia +opengl +oss +png +real +rtc -samba +sdl +sse +sse2 +svga +tga +theora +truetype -v4l -v4l2 +vorbis -win32codecs -xanim -xinerama +xmms +xv +xvid -xvmc 0 kB

edit : you should give the console output of xmms or mplayer, when you want to use them.

I solved the problem down-grade Freetype.

You use the lastest version Freetype, but you don't have any problem?

Wow... That problem is only my system's problem?

but The user who use the gentoo linux has same problem with me, he solved the problem same method too.

I want to listen many users opinion.

Thank you for your reply :-) I have to check my system once again....

freetype 2.1.10 is long overdue and full of bugfixes and improvements. I've had no problem using it so far.

freetype 2.1.10 completely messed up X on my computer. Every time I tried running a program X would segfault. Not fun.

The new freetype worked well on my system except the fonts in firefox looked a bit different.
Anyway, I'm happy with 2.1.9-r1.

Just figured out what was causing it on my computer. If I set LC_ALL to en_US.utf8, X dies every time. If I set LC_ALL to POSIX then everything runs fine.

Question to the people who have it working, are you using ut8?

I'm using UTF-8, yes. My LC_ALL and LANG environment settings are both "en_US.utf8" and set in /etc/env.d/02locales as suggested in the UTF-8 guide.

me too.
For example, it is if it is going to see this page, X server abort by "Caught signal 4".
It is satisfactory if the line of "Load "freetype"" in xorg.conf is commented out.
I have always set ja_JP.eucJP as LANG.
but LANG and LC_ALL It is ineffective even if it sets it as "C".
The cjk font may be a factor?
Code:

[ebuild   R   ] x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r2  -3dfx -3dnow +bitmap-fonts +cjk -debug -dlloader -dmx -doc -font-server -insecure-drivers -ipv6 -minimal +mmx -nls -nocxx +opengl +pam -sdk +sse -static +truetype-fonts +type1-fonts (-uclibc) -xprint +xv 170 kB
[ebuild   R   ] media-libs/freetype-2.1.10  -bindist -doc +zlib 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.0.5  -debug -gnome -ipv6 -java -mozdevelop -moznoxft -mozsvg +truetype -xinerama -xprint 0 kB

That bug is discussed in https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99089 and I just posted a patch for freetype-2.1.10 which resolves it. A good explanation of what caused those crashes can be found here: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/freetype-devel/2005-08/msg00014.html
