You're wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off.... He is allowed to touch a computer for a bout a month ago I guess...

Either way, of course he didn't 'admined' the server, but it's ironical either way

Well, you cannot ask somebody that has been away of computers for some years to avoid this kind of thing. I think it must have been some lame scriptmonkeyz thinking how great they would be if they hacked the website of one of the greatest hackers. Oh dear... children.

I would like to see Kevin tracing them back and getting them the same remedy he had to swallow.

I would too. Of course, Mr Mitnick is a reformed character...

Check out his book on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk for us British Gentooers.

See, he's writing books about social engineers etc. It's actually not a bad book.

His probation deal just ended. A guy here at my school knows him pretty well, so we hear about him from time to time. Yes, he hasn't been allowed to touch a computer since I think 1993, but that just finished, and yes he got hacked (more than once actually). In his defense though, he probably had a lot of people going after him (I hacked Kevin Mitnick! I'm a 1337 hax0r! ) and he hasn't been able to use a computer for ten years so his security is a little rusty.

It wasn't him who took care of the machine's security for sure...

When a website is defaced, it's not the admin who gets hacked, it's who's represented on the website.. Right? 8O

Ummmm...
From a news-worthy angle: The owner of the contents
From a sober point of view: The site admin

If I hand over the admin of a web-page to a web-hosting service where I have no control of security, I'm not the one getting hacked, but the web-hosting service provider. This is ofcourse way too difficult for a news journalist to understand.

Analogy: If a bank gets robbed and you happen to have an account there, was it you or the bank that got robbed?

oooooo I dunno, a lot has changed since his hey day. hes older, hes not gonna learn as fast as he used too.. and there is a LOT to catch up on. The security of _secure++_ boxes is a LOT different from the type of boxes he was hacking. And i doubt he would have much luck with his social enginering skills anymore either.

I rekon a few phrack folck could take him down no probs.

I don't know about this. I have never subscribed to the 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks' theory. I think there's a lot of human history proving that humans were designed to overcome things like this. Mitnick isn't dumb and I fully believe he can 'learn as fast as' he used to. I simply think it's not in his best interests. First of all, he was never the hacker the media portrayed him to be. The myth and expectation is something that he would never be able to live up to. Secondly, he has much more motivation to approach things from a vastly different standpoint than he did before. He's got name recognition. That changes everything. He's actually very similar to Bill Gates in that respect. How much coding do you think Bill does? How many speaches do you think he gives? How much coding do you really expect Mitnick to do? How many consultations with senior exectives of client companies do you think he'll be doing? None of that will take away from his ability to learn as fast as he used to. He's not ancient. If he was 80-something years old and hadn't touched a computer in forty years or something then he might have more trouble catching up.

I find it doubtful that that Kevin was responsible for securing that server. More likely that it was hosted by someone elses server. Lots has changed since Kevins exploits as a phreaker/cracker however I'm sure he would get up to speed fast if that was his plan. I would like to see Kevin succeed with his business plans and have a good life. As far as getting rejected from the ISSA, it's possible that he embarrassed some of these people during his prime.

it wasent kevins fault the server got hacked. hell it run an iis server with Frontpage!

there was some faulty configurations in the Frontpage extensions, all the kiddie needed to do was creat a map on his desktop called www.defensivethinkin.com and open it, then it showed the servers root! and then just drag & drop some file over there...

I'm assuming that by 'in his prime' you mean 'at the low point of his life where he was devoting all his energies to breaking into computer and telephone systems.'

Not at all. I simply meant at the peak of his abilities doing whatever he was doing. I do think he was misguided with too much time on his hands though.

How can your abilities peak when you haven't clearly defined what you are doing? The simple answer is that they can't. Kevin certainly knew what he was doing at the time. He's since admitted that it was wrong and that he was childish. His complaint was that his punishment was overly harsh. This is quite possibly true, but he would never say now that he was at a peak moment when he was doing what he did. If he were to do this, it would destroy his already shakey reputation in computer security. Would you want an admitted arsonist installing your fire alarm? Does being a child molester qualify you to work as a baby sitter? Why should a computer criminal be in charge of computer security? Kevin would have a hard time selling computer security to me.
