OK, I have posted about this before, but it was at the bottom of another post and no one responded and it has been about two months.
I have an NEC FE2111 monitor, it can do 1600x1200@85Hz fine in Windows, but will not allow me to run it at anything higher than 1600x1200@84.8Hz in Linux. I have tried modelines from about every single modeline generator and possibility of modelines and the best I can get is to run at 84.8hz. This wouldn't be a problem, other than when running at 84.8Hz, the monitor is unreadable, while at 85Hz it is fine.

I have Geforce3 card, and have tried with many of the nvidia drivers and also the nv driver from xfree. I have tried 2 versions of xfree, one being the most recent in stable portage, and one version before that (sorry I don't remember the version numbers right now).

Any ideas/ suggestions? I am actually typing this on my laptop connected to the monitor running at 85hz right now, and it is fine.

I tried some of the edid options for nvidia cards, and they didn't help either. I talked with NEC support and they really didn't know much about xfree or why that would happen.

Thanks for the help!
Andrew

What do you mean by unreadable?

I assume you're using the nvidia driver, have you tried the nv driver just to see what happens? Timing is effected by the driver.

When running at 84.8hz, the monitor is very fuzzy, to the point where it gives me a head ache. Where as when running at 85hz it is fine.

yes

All the drivers I have tried acomplish the same thing, which is to say that they don't work correctly.

To clarify, I can run fine with the monitor set to 1280x1024@85hz, so that is how I use it, but I would like to be able to run 16x12, as that was one of my main reasons to get a new monitor.

Thanks

Maybe the blurryness is actually caused by something else other then the refresh rate being .2Hz different...

How does it look when you run it at 1600x1200@75Hz in Linux?

It looks fine, but 75Hz is slightly too slow for me, I would rather have 85Hz as it is easier on the eyes in my opinion.

Thanks
