Hello all,
Was just browsing around the Sun website, and read about the Ultra 20 workstation they're starting out at a base or $895. They will put Solaris, RH or SUSE on....
What would be your guess that Gentoo would install and work on it pretty easily?
I think this box came out awhile back..with a higher price tag...has anyone worked with this box before? Look like it could be a pretty decent workstation...I'd prefer to have Gentoo on it as that is what I'm most used to...
TIA,

I'd be concerned about Sun bios weirdness. You'd think gentoo would work on anything redhat would work on, but I wonder if the boot process is any different from standard x86. _________________ Petition for Better 64-bit ATI Drivers - Sign Here

Well, Im running AMD64 Gentoo right now on a w1100z java workstation, which I can honestly say was a snap to set up. No hardware detection issues at all; ethernet, firewall, syslog, cron, alsa, nvidia graphics driver all no problem. Mplayer, amule, gnome-light, enlightenment DR-16 and (as well as a testing DR-17) all, ok too. Hell, I've even got a Nova-T card and freevo running. Bios hasn't been an issue, and I've flashed it once to upgrade it to E4 stepping.
The only problem I've had is that I can't get the damn thing to sleep correctly, but Im not sure whether that is a Sun or an AMD64 issue. Overall, though, its really been a quality system. Well put together and solid. |

There is a v40 review on Anandtech and there is a screenshot where you can see that this workstation uses Phoenix server bios v3 release 6.0 , so you might search if this type of bios works with linux. _________________ core2quad, mainboard: dfi lanparty ut icfx 3200-T2R/G, 2gb ram, radeon 4850, samsung 1tb, 512gb and an old maxtor diamond max 200gb, sound: sb xfi titanium. |

I have Gentoo working fine on a v20z (I assume that this is what you mean?). Absolutely no install issues at all, and rock solid. 2 x Opteron 248 / 4 Gb RAM. Very fast.
