A question. The game, of course is copyrighted and the license is not transferable, so /me giving/lending/copying the cd is illegal, right. However, what is wrong, legally speaking, with /me giving my cdkey to someone else ? Is the cdkey under copyright ? |

dude, you're REALLY streatching.. anyone with half a brain can tell people have been repeadedly discussing Illegal means of working around doom3's linux ports cdkey check on this thread and you know its not right, should have been locked days ago. Having this kind of discussion in linux forums anywhere is horrible disrespect to the linux community, for people who want to group us together this is all they need to claim us to be ruthless hackers that dont want to pay for anything and why they shouldn't bother to port thier games.. |

I think you got the question very wrong. I am not a US citizen, I don't understand US law. I am not suggesting or encouraging illegal acitivity. I am asking what is the letter of law on the matter, if anyone knows.
I think law is a rather complex topic, requiring more than a half brain to understand, and I know that I don't understand it, so I asked a polite question.
If the mods belive that by locking the topic any illegal activity will be prevented - lock it already !
And discussing a legal matter is not disrespect to anything !!! |

technically its fine if you give your cdkey to someone else to use, as long as you're not using it at the same time, also its fine to give your cds to someone else and it is ok for the current owner of the origonal cds to have bacups around in order to prevent the origonal product from getting damaged. I'm sorry, I thought you were trying to justify the discussion that has been goin on in the thread as legal. Its not disrespectfull to talk about illegal things but it is disrespectfull to give people hints as to how to illegally bypass a security system on the official forumns of a distribution of an os that is trying to get more credibility among proprietary vendors right now.
Imagine you're a company trying to decide wether it would be worth your while to make a linux port, the only reason it would is if you are incredibly small or you are just loyal to linux because there is no way that you will gain profit off of investing time into a linux port right now. You go to the biggest distro for gamers in linux, gentoo, go to thier games forumn and you see them hinting to eachother how to bypass a cdkey check.. |

Thanks for the information.
I am sure that comapnies that don't port their games to Linux have business reasons for it. Like porting costs, cost of technology change, relations with *certain monopolies*. Piracy exists everywhere and this is hardly news for anyone. Of course, whether providing cracking instructions is in adherance with the rules and task of *these* forums is a different topic, and I fully agree that such information does not belong here. |

|
|
i just did emerge doom3. and tried playing the game. but when asked for my cd key, it kept on saying it was invalid. then i looked closer and noticed that it was saying that the RoE cd key was invalid etc etc. I kept asking myself RoE? i dont have that. so why is it asking me for the key?
so then i look on here, and i dont really find anything useful. so i google doom3 linux. i start reading an official looking guide and it mentions something about how if i wanted to get the expansion working in linux i need to put the files in some directory called d3xp where i installed doom3. so i check in my /opt/doom3. and lo and behold there is a directory called d3xp. it shouldnt be there. unless you own the expansion. so i renamed it to d3xp_backup. re-ran doom3. entered the cdkey and it worked. so now i play.
thanks. bye. |

Funny how all the posts I've seen lately from you are piracy accusations instead of resolutions to the problem. Also, it seems that the ebuild automagically places the directory there, and that could be enough to trigger key request, but I really wouldn't know. I haven't installed D3 in ages, and when I do, I have both base and xp installed so I've never noticed this anomaly. I'm glad I could help, though. _________________ CPU: 3800+ X2 (2.5Ghz)
