Howdy guys,
I've got a general question regarding Airport (802.11b) that after reading the handbook and searching the forums I haven't really found an answer yet.
I'll be trying to install Gentoo on an ancient original Blueberry iBook with an Airport card and was wondering if Airport running under Gentoo could auto-sense and detect wireless networks and access points (i.e. like the wireless network at my university library.)
I'm not adverse to any and all workarounds or solutions no matter how complex, I just want to know if it's possible.

| Sorry to be vague, as I haven't booted into gentoo for a long while now, but I believe there is a daemon that does exactly that. Forget the name of it... I never used it as I only access wireless in my home. |

That's good to know something out there exists then.
Anybody else have any information?
[edit: Mind you, I actually haven't installed Gentoo yet. I'm still waiting for the hardware in the mail.]

With the newest airport drivers (net-wireless/orinoco in portage) and a program like AP Radar (http://apradar.sourceforge.net) this is quite easy. Fire up APRadar, select the network you want and it will automatically connect and start dhcp-client for you so that you can immediately start using the wireless network.
Also note that setting your essid to "any":

will make the driver look for the next best available wireless network and connect to it.

What's the difference between this orinoco ebuild and the hermes modules of the kernel?
Right now, I have a patched hermes module working with kismet.
Will that work also with the orinoco ebuild?
Why isn't it in portage?
So apradar ./configure sais: | Code: | | configure: error: libgtkmm-devel version 2.0 or newer needed |
which I can't find in portage neither.

I just tried to install the orinoco ebuild, and got the following error message:

Now, I'm using wireless b/c I haven't got long enough cable to reach my room. So in order to emerge that driver, I need to be using my wireless card. If my kernel's config'd w/o Hermes, I can't. Which suggests that either
(1) Catch 22, natch!
or
(2) I need to (a) Reconfigure my kernel (b) emerge the driver (c) recompile my kernel (d) reboot then (e) cross my fingers... and that sounds like anything but convenience.
Then again, I'm the sucker who chose to run Gentoo on an iBook, so who am I to bitch about convenience?
