Hello Everyone,
It has been awhile since I have last used any linux OS, Redhat 9 being the last and even then I was still new to the linux world. I have recently renewed my interest in linux but was having some problems with the copy of redhat that I have. While stumbling thru some websites trying to find some answers, I managed to come across Gentoo. So, I have a couple of questions if anyone would mind answering them.
1. Is Gentoo something someone with little experience get up and running fairly easily?
2. Are the commands for Gentoo the same as redhat 9?
3. Are there any other useful sites that could be recommended for a new user to linux/gentoo?
Thanks for your time. |

Welcome to Gentoo, It can be the best operating system you have ever used.

Easy? well yes it can be. But it is time consuming and will teach you a lot.
Not a drop in and click install like winblows.

Not all but some (Core linux specific)

Yes, you will find more and better documentation for gentoo than any other OS .
http://www.gentoo.org/
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
Follow the handbook step by step, don't get in a hurry and don't skip anything unless it tells you to.

It is linux in that all linux commands are the same. The only difference is distro specifc application commands. Gentoo is really easy, and the biggest differentiator in my opinion is that online source / package management system (Portage).
It's really well done. You will not be faced with dependency hell as you would with other distros. Just type in emerge -v <app>. It will download the source, compile the source optimized and taylored to your environment (process, audio, memory, etc...,) all depends on what you've got setup on your /etc/make.conf. Emerge will do the rest. It will also automatically download all required dependency sources, compile them, merge them, and install it for you automatically.
Once you get the hang of it, you're going to love it! |

Gentoo is the fastest distribution, because you set your distribution for a specific hardware and also, you have the control to manage your boot procedure.
So, no more 365 modules loaded for a single ethernet card.
You will learn a lot, but the first time you will install a Gentoo, take your time...this is not a race |

Yes, that too!
I have a lot of respect for those who designed the portage structure. Great job! Before any of these dependencies are compiled, it checks to see what specific compiler is needed to compile that very dependency. It will then download the compiler codes, and compile the compiler, and use that compiler to compile the dependency (my god, I am going cross-eyed...)
It works! |
