Not to ruffle any feathers here, but why doesn't Alpha have it's own forum? Alpha is probably the best supported platform for Linux behind x86. There's probably more Alphas running Linux out there than Linux on PPC and SPARC combined.

Just a thought...

Generally, a new forum gets created for an Alt. arch when it is decided that there is considerate demand for one. Like when amd64 suddenly became popular, and the entire first page of the Alt. Arch forums was flooded with amd64 topics, that was considered enough for a new forum for them.

As for your statement, based on my observations, there are probably more PPC and Sparc users than Alpha. Sparc and PPC are also one of the more maintained arches in the main kernel tree. But then again, those are just my observations. MIPS doesn't even have its own forum yet, and probably won't for some time. I've just never seen enough MIPS-specific questions popup here in a large enough quantity to justify seeking a MIPS forum. Maybe in the future this will change, for both MIPS and Alpha, but one never knows.

as does MIPS... We get worried about the raging hoards of users when we see two posts on it in the same week. :-)

and another, DS10 running for last year just updated from 2.4 to 2.6 kernel,
about to gentoo an ES40,
First issue I have ever had with the box is the nptl / linuxthreads glibc causing mysql to leave defunct processes
the solution seems to be here and not on the mailing list, plus forum is easier to use

no, my friend took the DS10 and the DS20, and left me two identical box ... AS1200 from memory.

is DS20 is already a kind of AS1200, just tell me, and I ll grab a more precise reference.

ooh I had (have)work not personal kit, a 1200 single cpu with built in raid array, was an absolutely rock solid webserver for years... (I haven't gentoo'd it) it was Tru64 4.0F just like my gentoo ds20 was rock solid... untill the linuxthreads NPTL thing came along Have fun

what changed with NPTL ? better perfs oncheaper x86 ?
broken Alpha ?

per box:
two EV56 500MHz 133MHz FSB 4000ko cash
1.5GB RAM
10GB crossbar
256b bus
two PCI64b chains

one CPU per rack
8 RAM slots per rack

in a large server box: 2x600W (coupled, non redundant), 7 racks in front, 4 silent fans, smart 15 c LCD with my name on it.

I just deplore the missing IDE bus that DS20 and DS10 have ...

my friend could boot on IDE .... but I can use pure SDRAM ... when he has to search for expensive ~230 pin sticks :p

My box were fitted with SCSI CD reader + FD.

Still, I cant upgrade SRM due to broken LFU ... thats an other topic.

Hell I love Alpha.
