I need to emerge cppunit, which depends upon graphviz, which depends upon libpng-1.0.15. But I have libpng-1.2.5-r4 installed. What's the right way to do this without breaking everything that depends upon libpng 1.2.5-r4? Thanks.

They should both co-exist peacefully. libpng-1.0.15 has SLOT="1.0" defined in the ebuild and 1.2.5-r4 has SLOT="1.2". See the Portage Manual for more on SLOTs.

Thanks for the reply. Other than stating that Portage uses SLOTs, the manual doesn't really say how the user should use SLOTs. If I try emerge -p libpng-1.0.15 Portage tells me that it would delete libpng-1.2.5-r4. How do I get Portage to emerge both without removing either? Thanks, again.

Note added: Apparently when doing an emerge -p libpng-1.0.15 and Portage says that 1.2.5-r4 is installed and will be removed, this is misleading. Merging the 1.0.15 version does, indeed, install that version without removing the 1.2.5-r4 version because of different slots. Should this not be filed as a bug on Portage?
