Hi,

After installing Gentoo on a harddrive bought December 2002, setting
Code:
hdparm -X66 /dev/hda

on 6th of January 2003.

The 12th of January the harddrive was unreadable and failed the SMART test (in Matrox' test-program). The same program reported that this error was unrecoverable.

Is it possible that hdparm corrupted my harddrive? I know -X66 is unsupported and under development.

-X66 is supported, if you configure your kernel properly it will automatically run all the way up to udma6 if the mobo/hd both support it.

If you set the speed higher then the system can handle usually it will reject the new settings but under some circumstances it could allow them and then it would detect the errors and automatically reduce the rate.

filesystem corruption and physical problems with the drive are totally different. If you only had filesystem corruption but the drive itself was fine Maxtors diagnostic program would not report any problems.

If Matrox's diagnostic program shows there's problems with the drive then there's a physical defect with it and you should rma it yourself or return it to your retailer.
