I emerged a couple of updated gst-plugins that were updated today. Everything works fine except for rhythmbox, which has "stuttering" type sound. The other sound apps I've tried (BMP, mplayer, ut2004) seem unaffected. Reemerging rhythmbox did nothing.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and whether it's related to the gst stuff that was updated..

That's almost certainly a gstreamer issue. The issue you describe and other weird things with rhythmbox have happened to me off and on over the past year or so, always as the gstreamer versions change. I usually end up compiling rhythmbox with the xine backend until things clear up.

Downgrading gst-plugins-alsa worked wonderfully for me. Thanks, FrogLamb.

Reviving an aged thread...

gstreamer-plugins-alsa 0.8.10 seems to fix this for me, for what it's worth.

Edit: Nope. I was mistaken. :(

Yeah the problem remains in gst-plugins-alsa-0.8.10. However FLAC files play fine, seems only mp3s are effected.

*sigh*

Confirmed fix for me. Although... this seems to only be an issue on x86, since my AMD64 box doesn't have this problem.

Actually, on further thought, my x86 box with my SB Live! card doesn't have this issue either. Only my laptop with the ESS Maestro3.

Could this be a specific chipset issue?

I've since switched to using the ESounD output sink for gstreamer and things seem to work okay (I was using it for Gnome's sound effects anyway...). For this you'll need to install gst-plugins-esd and enable the sound server startup in your desktop sound preferences (or add the 'esound' script to your default runlevel).

Still no other possibility but downgrading? Posted a comment here: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=314689

btw, according to this thread asound.conf is not needed as of alsa-1.09b (just "nice to know"-stuff  )

I don't think that rhythmbox can compete with quod libet. Rhythmbox dissapointed me in so many ways... The only thing i'm missing in quod libet are my internet radio stations

Well rhythmbox has those stations so that's already one for rb  . But seriously I've been using the CVS-version of rb for ages, 'cos the releases were lagging behind so much.

QL does seem promising and has a lot of features. There are pros and cons for both. I wouldn't say that rb is a lot worser.

don't know if can work for you, but worked well for me (with terratec EWX 24/96, ICE1712 [Envy] chip)
all gstreamer apps were stuttering

increasing the buffer size and period did the job :)

i use gnome, in the menu Desktop -> Preferences -> Multimedia System Selector ,
Default Sink
Output : Custom
Pipeline: changed from "alsasink" to "alsasink period-size=1024 buffer-size=4096 mmap=false autorecover=false"

everything runs fine

taken from here : http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_sound_mixer_aka_dmix#Amarok.2Bgstreamer.2Balsasink_in_KDE

I have the latest gstreamer and plugins (0.8.11) and mine just started stuttering too. Tried downgrading to 8.10 but that didn't help. Neither did the buffer and period size. Anyone ever figure out what is screwing this up?

Going back to gst-plugins-alsa 0.8.8 fixed the problem for me. Also, increasing the buffer size to 16384 does help the newer gstreamers alsaink, but doesn't fix it.

Try as root:
Code:
mv /etc/asound.conf /etc/asound.conf.backup

and delete the one in your homedir, if you have one.

An old thread but sadly now this happens to me, too. For a long time rhythmbox worked just fine but now it stutters. I have had some gstreamer 0.10.x stuff installed which I removed again in the meanwhile. Now rhythmbox is stuttering. It seems something triggered that old bug.
