Hello,

I recently did an emerge -u system, and portage among a couple other ebuild were successfully emerged.

As indicated at the end of the emerge, there were 3 config files that needed updating. I immediately did an etc-update and ensured that my config files were up to snuff. They were:

/etc/make.conf
/etc/make.globals
/etc/etc-update.conf

I also read when portage was emerging that I had to ensure that anything in /etc/make.globals was reflected in my /etc/make.conf.

Ok, so I backed up make.conf, since it was the only config file that I had ever changed. I replaced make.conf with the new config file, and added my specific entries to the new config file, for example, my USE flag, mcpu, etc, etc...

I did an emerge rsync and was got that my PORTAGE_TMPDIR=',' was not valid, or something similar to that.

I grepped around to find that PORTAGE_TMPDIR was in make.conf, so I went in and found that make.conf contained a bunch of new lines that were commented out, specifying directory locations. I uncommented them all, as they appear to be the standard directories that portage was using before.

Again, I tried emerge rsync, this time, however, I get the following:

I have done an env-update, there are no stale config file, and the only thing in make.globals was

So I added that line in my make.conf, but I still get the same error.

What am I doing wrong? Right now, my computer is functioning fine, I can emerge -s and search for things, but I can't rsync.

I can still emerge things. I just tested by emerging nedit, and portage downloaded it from a mirror and started compiling.

Here is my make.conf file (Sorry.... I know it is huge, but I am assuming the problem is in here)

Also, my USE= is one continous line, even if it doesn't show that way below

Your make.globals is 1 line? That's a problem. Try emerging portage again, and let it update make.globals.

Thanks alot.... that was the solution. It was probably user error... but I'm just glad things are working ok again.
