Just picked up a Netra X1 from Ebay for £220 to use as a web/mail server and was pondering if I should use Gentoo on it.
It's a 500mhz / 512mb / 40gb model and will probably come with Solaris 9 on it.
Anybody have any opinions on what I should run with ? |

I'm running gentoo on a netra x1 in my house as a router/firewall. Its the perfect server for this job, a nice thin rackmount that looks cool. I'd also reccomend running the latest 2.6 kernel instead of the default 2.4 on single processor sparcs. I just upped mine to 2.6.11.8 and its running smooth as ever.
It doesn't come with a cdrom. So your choices are to either plug one into the second ide just to install or netboot it. I netbooted using the debian directions. Also remember that in Linux the ethernet ports are labeled backwards, so port 0 is eth1 and port 1 is eth0. |

Just a note to say that I finally got round to doing something with my Netra X1 today.
Netbooted from an x86 gentoo box using the howto, installed stage 3, got it booting with silo and on the network fine.
Off to learn a bit more about sparc kernel options before I start moving it up to 2.6 though. _________________ Help ! Help ! I'm being repressed |

If you have access to IRC, you might want to check with squash on #gentoo-sparc before moving to kernel-2.6. The last I knew, some netras had difficulties with kernel-2.6. I don't have a netra, nor do I have the details off the top of my head, but there are potential problems. squash, or perhaps gustavoz should have better information for you.
Sorry to be alarmist but vague,
Regards,
Ferris |

I don't have IRC at the moment but I'm sure if there are problems they'll be noted somewhere google can find them.
I used Slackware before so I'm used to RTFM.
Thanks for the heads up Ferris. _________________ Help ! Help ! I'm being repressed |
