this release can be marked as stable , but it's not RTP based.
so latest stable release is still : rc3-love1.
why ? , RTP is just love main goal.

NO RTP IN THIS VERSION because of BUGS IN RTP FOR RC4 KERNEL
FOR RTP PLEASE USE OUR LATEST STABLE LOVE : 2.6.12-rc3-love1
OR NEW testing version rc4-love3 RTP based will be available soon

Love-Sources 2.6.12-rc4-love2 "The Norwegian Blue Parrot"

This is testing_period now , If will be some errors by any other patch

FAQ wrote:

-- Love Sources FAQ --

Q: I have black-sreen freezing after startx
A: Please try compile kernel without vesa-tng support at all.

Q: Why Ingosched are in Love-Sources now ?
A: Ingosched has greatest testing because is tested for all vanilla users.
It is also defulat Linux 2.6 CPU Scheduler and it is pretty fixed now.
Ingosched developing also doesnt sleep, look into MM tree for example.
In this release is not RTP because of bugs in rc4 ( not fixed yet )

Q: How to use the RT rlimits patch for Linux Audio ?
A: please follow a nice how-to here -> http://www.steamballoon.com/wiki/Rlimits

Q: So, where did Reiser4 go?
A: Away

Q:Why?
A: A number of reasons, the love sources team strive to bring you the
best desktop experience and Reiser4 can greatly degrades interactivity and
increse cpu usage . It's unlogical to have CPU Scheduler with oriented for reducint
latencies and filesystem with maximal latencies.
It's also operating under several wrong assumptions on things
like page table sizes. Reiser4 also doesn't support architectures
aside x86 nor does it run on the default 4kb stack setting.

Q: So now that love-sources isn't going to support Reiser4 what do I do?
A: Compile one of the great number of Reiser4 enabled kernels, like
Andrew Morton's mm tree, that one is even in portage.

Q: Why are you pulling Reiser4, it's the base of Love-sources?
A: Actually it's not, when love-sources started it was in large part to
research how to allivate the famous music lag bug. A bug that Reiser4
ironically reintroduces.

Q: Okay so I shouldn't use Reiser4, what then?
A: Ext3 with dir_index is a much better/universal filesystem for a desktop in that
it performs nicely and has really good latency. Aside such likable
qualities as stability , it is in developing for "ages" in comparision to Reiser4 ;)

Q: Im an ext3 user , but how can I check or activate dir_index feature ?
A: Please check if You have it in superblock by this line :
1) my_box# tune2fs -l /dev/hdaXY
if You receive line like this one with dir_index :
Filesystem features: has_journal dir_index filetype needs_recovery sparse_super
You have it activated.
if not, please do :
1) tune2fs -O dir_index /dev/hdXY
2a) updatedb
or
2b) e2fsck -D /dev/hdXY

Q: Im a Laptop user, I want to increse my battery life-time, what should I do ?
A: Use JFS as Your filesystem. It has less cpu usage (definitly better than reiserfs/reiser4)
and Your battery lifetime will be incresed even up-to 30% in comparision to reiserfs/reiser4.
In Love-Sources You have up-to-date fixes for it.

Q: OK, Im interested in good interactivity , I can resign from reiser4 for this.
Now Im using other filesystem ( We recommending You ext3+dir_index ).
Which IO Scheduler should I use ?
A: Please try CFQ-TS io scheduler ( default in love-sources ).
This is Completly Fair Queuing IO Scheduler which gives You optimal destkop interactivity
even in heavy filesystem usage.

Q: What about NVIDIA and ATI fixes?
A: In current love there are no any NVIDIA or ATI fixes.
Please use DRIVER side fixes from the net ( many of it here ) .
If You're NVIDIA USER. Many of good fixes are just in GENTOO PORTAGE.
min kernel driver to run this sources is nvidia-kernel-6629-r4

hi fallow, if you were to assess IngoSched+RTP and IngoSched+Some of Nick Piggin like this test kernel, which one would yield better interactivity for a desktop?

better for interactivity is RTP based , so last stable version 2.6.12-rc3-love1.
this should be better for SMP and Multiprocessing. Is no RTP here only because of bugs.
In next version of love ( propably rc5 based ) will be RTP again , I hope without errors.
so If You like RTP just stay with rc3-love1. :)

PWE :

thanks for the OOPS text , I will look and check it later , now I must go ..
but , for the first look --->> damn , so many problems with rc4 stuff...

sa stable release is still rc3-love1 with RTP

thanks & cheers .... :(

( like always i try it on gentoo64  )

thanks Gringo :) . I better like RTP based , so I personally staying with rc3-love1 . even in rc4-vanilla I see some troubles. rc3 and rc3-love1 is working superb for me.

hrm It booted okay but it was unable to mount my reiser3 partition rw and then it asks for control-d to continue. I got the same error with 2.6.12-rc4-nitro1. Must be something with the rc4 kernel. oh well.

Wohoooo up for about 24h on two productivity systems and one server, no problems so far

Finally, my IPW2100 works again, don't know why, but who cares ;)
Only my "standard" problem remains, can't get the ATI "drivers" to work(tried the original and the modded ebuild from rc2).

Quote:
ph03n1x ~ # modprobe fglrx
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.12-rc4-love2-ph030-BitchSmacker/video/fglrx.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Quote:
ph03n1x ~ # dmesg
[...]
fglrx: module license 'Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY' taints kernel.
fglrx: Unknown symbol inter_module_get
fglrx: Unknown symbol inter_module_get
fglrx: Unknown symbol inter_module_get

The according posts haven't helped much, but I'm sure I/we'll get this fixed, too!

Anyway, nice work again and thx for kicking Reiser4 ;)

cheers,
ph030

Hehe, no risk, no fun :)
For me, love-sources are quite stable, never had big problems. Besides that, a productive system should be as responsible as possible and that's what love-sources are giving me. ATI "drivers" are just for fun(a little round Q3) and experimenting with transparency effects :)

Anyways, I always have at least one stable kernel, if something strange happens and ... better an not official supported kernel than an "banana software" like a Windows-System ;)

cheers,

the 'properly stop devices before poweroff' patches, they sound partially important but will they break anything if i don't apply them? i'm trying to manually patch software-supsend2 (2.1.8.9 for 2.6.12-rc4) but i don't know the first thing about coding, and the two patch sets don't play friendly together (suspend.c breaks shit when i try to build it; i manually patched the love patches and tried to compile...ya, not happening).

also, 8250.o doesn't apply cleanly - it's a serial driver, are there any internal devices that sitll use serial? i know i don't use it, so can i safely remove that without killing something? hmmm guess i'll just give a shot and see wtf happens

anybody wanna be cool and help me out  8) i gots me a new laptop and wanna play around with this

btw perfectly stable on my AthlonXP desktop, another great release, thanks!!

edit: gah. i can't even get that far. i deleted all the drivers/base/power patches out of love, but it still fails with an error (as expected, i don't know wtf i'm doing. just trying to get lucky)
Code:
CC      drivers/base/power/shutdown.o
drivers/base/power/shutdown.c: In function `device_detach_shutdown':
drivers/base/power/shutdown.c:24: error: structure has no member named `detach_state'
drivers/base/power/shutdown.c:27: error: structure has no member named `detach_state'
make[3]: *** [drivers/base/power/shutdown.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** [drivers/base/power] Error 2
make[1]: *** [drivers/base] Error 2
make: *** [drivers] Error 2

...with no luck :?

anybody feel like being cool :?:

sws2 is not supported but the love-sources developers, if you insist on patching it in, especially considering you already aknowledge that your coding skills are worse than your average rock, please don't report bugs... ever... mmmkay?
