PostPosted: Mon May 16, 2005 12:14 am    Post subject: mac mini and gentoo Reply with quote

I asked these questions when the mini first came out, but I am seeking help again. I have a mac mini, with a 20 in display. I have most things working, sound, nic, console video, and all my services and what not. But I can not start X. It always craps out on me unless i use fbdev for the driver. The only time I have ever gotten it to work was with a yellow dog kernel, that when recompiled for gentoo did not work either, I am looking for the kernel I will need and the XF86Config to run it at 1680x1050 like my mac can. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Use Xorgautoconfig (available here: http://dev.gentoo.org/~josejx/Xorgautoconfig.tar.bz2 ). Depending on how the monitor is attached you may have to tell it that you're using digital or analog as well.

Good luck!

Well, It generated the same config file i already had except for it used the fbdev for driver. Which works.... but not really, and when I flip it over to radeon it is the same thing. I am probably missing something in the kernel, but anywhere I saw radeon I built it in, I am using 2.6.10-r6.

Matt, I suggest contacting the kernel radeon ppc person, namely Benjamin Herrenschmidt, email:
benh (at) kernel (dot) crashing (dot) org

Make sure you give him much infomation as possible. He helped me to solve an issue with my radeon 9600 pro on my powermac and the radeonfb in all kernels after 2.6.9-r9, with my Apple LCD 23" (plastic).

Ben suggested the following info that he at the very least required:
Quote:
> Things like: type of monitor, type of connector, dmesg output (with
> radeonfb verbose debug config option enabled), x.org config file and
> log, when does the flickering happen ? in console ? in X ? in both ?
> what precisely do you call flickering, etc.. etc..
>

Of course substitute the flickering with the symptoms of your problems.

Also give him the output of
Code:
lspci -vv and /proc/cpuinfo
as root.

Just for completness I provided the following files in addition to a description of my problem:
Quote:
xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, dmesg kernel .config file, /proc/cpuinfo (I forgot the lscpi -vv)

Good luck.

Well, I'd rather that we try and work this out on the forums first, BenH is actually the PPC kernel maintainer (you can thank him for being able to run Linux on your PPC). It would be good for you to post all of those suggested things so I can improve the Xorgautoconfig tool since we will be using that for PPC LiveCDs in the near future. How is your monitor attached? What is the problem you're having with FBDev? The more specific you are with your problem, the easier it is to figure out what's wrong.

Yes, JoseJX, you are correct we should try to work it out first. Sorry for jumping the gun with my suggestion of mailing BenH. I did, however, post my problem as part of another ppc thread but go not answer and after 3 months I consulted BenH (I don't normally ever contact, well harass him ;-) Maybe, I should have started a specific thread.
I am curious though, if the problem can't solved here on the ppc gentoo forum, who normally then goes about informing the next in line reponsible (could for example BenH) ? I'm just trying to find out what to do in a similar situation.

Okay my problem is as follows. I have a macmini with a 1.42 ghz proccessor, and 512mb of ram, the radeon is ATI Radeon 9200 with 32MB of DDR SDRAM with AGP 4X support. I have an apple 20inc cinema display, the newest model, it connects over dvi, and can support resolution up to 1680x1050. With the xorg below with fbdev specified as the driver I will be given an x connection that is overlapped on itself and distorted it is also in black and white only, no twm green. If I switch it to readeon, My X begins to start, the screen goes black with a single _ in the top right corner while it flushes the buffer I think, then the monitor flips off like it has no signal. If I kill X I can then type reboot, but I will never get the monitor up and running again. I was able to get this working with a config produced identical to xorgs, but I was running a yellow dog 2.6.10 kernel initrd.img and got it working. so anythoughts or suggestions would rock, and thanks for benh's contacts. But I will keep it in the forum if possible.

Here are my configs.

Alright, I've found out that support for Cinema displays <= 23" has been improved in the latest X.org snapshot. Try using xorg-x11-6.8.99.5 and let us know if that helps.

Note there is a bug with xorg-x11-6.8.99.3 and xorg-x11-6.8.99.5 They both compile OK but X starts really slowly and takes up alot of memory. See https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90766 for the solution (something about removing a symlink).

Okay I have tried every kernel config, X config etc under the sun. Please help, I really don't want to flip back over to yellowdog for my stupid monitor. But I guess if I do, I can just install portage on top of it ^_^ Well thanks for all the help thus far and any other help anyone could provide.

If Yellowdog works, why don't you check out what versions they are using and what changes they have made to the code to get it to work? It's open source, so they have to provide the information. Maybe that their patches could be integrated into Gentoo.

Well, I am using the same version of x, and similar kernels, i even went as far as to build a kernel with their config. I have no idea why their's works and gentoo's doesnt.

Have they applied any patches to their kernel or xorg. I know that most vendors apply patches to add features and bug fixes that aren't yet in the mainline releases.

Using analog vga or dvi? Make sure you have a good quality cable in any case. I've read about people with your kind of problems due to cables of apparently not high enough quality. For a 20" screen at high res you need to pump quite a bit of signal around. Some cables are not up to that.

I have a MacMini, Gentoo, kernel 2.6.12-r6 (sound works), xorg 6.8.2-r2, and a DVI monitor SONY SDM-HS74P.

XOrg looks great if use the "UseFBDev true" option in the device section. Without this option i have no errors about agp or radeon but a black screen and "no signal" appears on monitor. Same if using xorg with usefbdev and loads the game bzflag: At the moment of enter a game only a black screen is obtained.

I'm really lost. I've tried all xorg and kernel configurations over the world.

Adding
Code:
Option "MonitorLayout" "TMDS"
to /etc/X11/xorg.conf solved my screen problems with the mac mini (1280x1024 LCD Panel connected over DVI).

The guy who posted this bug in the xorg bugzilla, seems to have it working. He only is experiencing problems with the Render extension.

Maybe you can have a look and tell us if it helps
