fallow,
I am about to publish a kernel to sf.net, could I use your def_iosched_select_menu.diff patch?

I have no any objections :)

Which performs better for you guys, Ingo Low Latency Desktop or Staircase? I still get better performance, with 2.6.12-rc4 patched with ck, a few mm patches, and cfq-ts.

Ingosched + RTP Low latency desktop works very nicely for me, I haven't tried the very latest staircase which Con says contain an important fix.

Yeah , Im on rc4-mm2 + Staircase 11.2 for testing, Interactivity is also superb. Con is doing great work. Without more scientific testing there is no way to do judgement . Judging by "eye" isnt so good.

cheers

How about adding mod15write fix? It's a small patch affecting only those with blacklisted disks and Sil 3112 chipset, and is a far better solution than the existing one which limits writes to 8k. http://home-tj.org/m15w/ I was able to patch rc4-love1 with it.

As this been pushed upstream, say to Linus or Andrew - and what does the maintainer think?

Sorry, but I don't get it now... What are you saying?

Something else,
On shutdown I get KERNEL PANIC 8O . It happens only with rc4-love1 (my rc3-love1 was patched as well but everything was fine there).

The kernel panic occurs pretty early, it just shuts down XDM and stuff and it dies, before unmouting any filesystem (so I have lots of fscking after every reboot). I'm back on using rc3-love1 now, where everything is OK.
Is there anyway I can show you what kernel panic says? It is *not* in my /var/log/messages . All I can see there is from dmesg of that boot, which I can show you here:

1) This is still _testing_ not final release and Im worried at the moment if this rc4-love1 will _ever_ become as official release ever with current troubles. One is fixed ( dependiency structure in Kconfig.debug ) but is still RTP Ingo's fault with x86_64, and propably RTP reason also for madwifi.

but we have to wait until Ingo will do fixing ...hmm
2) Yeah rc3-love1 is marked as official / stable . no problems with it

3)Is way , You can choose options for debugging and logging in kernel hacking menu
also potential BUG on and pointer to line number and file will be helpfull and some of the trace parts

but....

Im really worried about this release ...
and if we will have in the future more problems collecting to RTP for example , even not problems maded by us , will be not so good.

I have great thinking now about potential changing RTP for some other alternative.
But intstead of RTP is only one alternative for me ... because of design oriented for interactivity the choice is Staircase and stuff. also Staircase is an metured project now , and its good supported by Con.

Im really not sure , and I want to think about all positives and negatives of potential changing.....

ah to the end. Im not sure about further working on this release is worth of the time.
maybe better is just to do another better release for rc4.
for me this isnt stable and cant be marked as official.

so im against supporting it , and for doing next one , a better .

cheers.

indeed! i have same oops on shutdown, and everytime i start X all my framebuffers get b0rked, no matter if i use vesafb or -tng ...

also -rc4-ck1 is slow like hell compared to -rc2-ck1, and i'm not the only one experiencing that o.O

so somehow looks like some evil stuff in -rc4?

will test -rc4-ck1 with staircase 11.2 update now, and also -rc4-git1 in it, lets see... :)

The page just says that he submitted it for the ata development tree, no real updates since that, it would be really nice if someone besides the author of this patch commented on it's stability.. so I asked if you or anyone knew if it had been pushed upstream or debating had taken place on lkml.

Ok.. you say enable logging in kernel hacking menu. Where can I find the log after that?

Thought I could help by giving some debug info, but maybe it's meaningless, as you suggest. . Maybe it isn't the kernel code itself that is buggy but the rather complicated assembly of patches...which might be broken in some way..

Will be next in near future

Is this version dumped because of compilation or runtime issues?

I must admit I pretty much started to love it. I haven't run into any runtime problems (except the ones not limited to love). And interactivity is great, even when compared to staircase. Even fork-bombing doesn't make the music playback skip ;-)

for many people are errors in this release . for many of them even oopses. (I also had a one ) .
its good that its working for the rest but if for many people this not working correctly , this release cannot be marked as stable or official. because of too many errors / oopses.
our last stable release / very good working is still rc3-love1. I see some errors in rc4 vanilla , so all rc4-based kernels will be not so stable for me. rc3-love1 is working best without any problems for many people so this is stable official release :)

cheers.
