I also had these lockups, but only since recently.
And I think I found my solution!

A couple of weeks ago, I updated to the new 2006.1 profile, together with a gcc upgrade (3.4 -> 4.x).
I followed the procedure described in http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-494331.html.

I think my lockup problems started right then.

After a rebuild of the toolchain and the first emerge -e system, as described in Bob P's Stage 1/3 Installation Support, better known as the Jackass method, my system has been running without lockup for over 2 days.

Keeping my fingers crossed ;)

Status Update: Uptime 14d 3:40, Firefox running practically the entire time. Zero lockups. I'm beginning to think my problem has been solved...

I lost my uptime. It locked up on me shortly after my last message, and I can't really identify the cause (DPMS had kicked in, and I had that scary sounding tone coming from my speakers). I think it had something to do with me compiling nvidia-drivers, and Firefox 2.0 at the same time. But, each seemed to complete OK, so I dunno. It could have been that I left Firefox 1.5 open when installing 2.0 (I know I did that), and some window made a call to library or object that is now a 2.0 file, and that caused the lockup. I know that shouldn't have, but that's the best explanation I can come up with.

Since I posted a week or so ago I haven't experienced any hard "lockups" -- but it's always the same thing. Computer goes unresponsive, audio freezes up, I can't connect via VNC anymore but I can still move the cursor around using the mouse on that machine (very slowly, refreshes position only once every couple seconds). I can still connect via SSH as well, but it responds a bit slower than usual.

Edit: I don't know whether this matters or not either, but when it crashes (as it just did moments ago) it will frequently crash in the middle of a song <i>but</i> the song still plays through to the very end of the tune without so much as a stutter -- it just never gets to loading the next song. I say it crashes midway through because I can tell as the screen is frozen in that position. /Edit

Within a few minutes minutes X appears to detect something is wrong, and it restarts. Once restarted everything continues normally.

This can happen several times a day--or not at all. There seems to be no rhyme or reason. Again I state that this is under <b>extremely</b> light usage. The machine gets connected to via VNC a few times a day and I change the playlist in Amarok or skip a song. Firefox is not being loaded at all, so I sincerely doubt that has anything to do with the problem.

I also doubt that uptime has anything to do with it because this machine gets shut down every night; the problem can occur within a half-hour of booting up or not at all for an entire day. I'm always starting with a 'clean slate' as well -- no suspend to ram or disk in use.

The only thing I have noticed is that every time a crash occurred, Amarok was open on the screen (both playlist and player windows) which means lots of little things moving around. Lately I have been making an effort to minimise the application when not in use and I have not had a crash yet when the application is not "visible" on the screen.

This evidence is highly circumstantial, but it's all I've got to go on right now. Unfortunately this doesn't seem like it's going to be helpful to anyone trying to solve the bug. My best-guess right now, though, is that the bug I am experiencing (assuming that most of us are actually experiencing the same bug at all) has something to do with display drivers--but <b>not</b> something vendor-specific; rather some other non-hardware-specific layer within X which means that the problem occurs on everyone's copy of X regardless of who their display hardware vendor is be it ATI, nVIDIA, Matrox (like me) or whoever else.

Some history: For months and months I kept having these lockups, starting from the purchase of a new motherboard, until I finally pinned down the problem to the northbridge cooler not functioning efficiently enough. I installed another cooler, a passive one this time, and made sure that there was enough thermal paste. My problems vanished. Though, there was the incident of the broken hard drive, but I supposed the constant switchings on and off must have took a toll on it. I got another hard drive, and everything was fine again.

A year passed. Suddenly, the freezes were back in force. Things got rapidly worse and within days my computer was practically unbootable. It was the time to buy hardware yet again.

But this time I think I have discovered the real problem that had been there all along: the power source. The other solutions were all bandaids that worked because they reduced power consumption. The power source must have been mildly defective all along and growing gradually more broken, but the first time I pushed it hard enough was must have been with my new motherboard, an Abit NF7 nForce2 to replace the old VIA thing. Or maybe the VIA was the first victim of the power source. After that I started to get freezes, and little by little those got worse. In the early days the Magic SysRq would work, but later it sometimes wouldn't. I noticed that the lockups were especially common when it was cold outside and the central heating was on. So I switched the northbridge solution, and things worked out, probably because the new passive cooler took less (no) power, pushing things below the power source's acting-up threshold. Then I had the hard drive incident, and the newer, more modern replacement probably uses less energy there too.

Check your power sources, people! I haven't had a freeze in many hours now that I switched power bricks, which is pretty good, considering that a little while earlier it was a thriumph to actually get the machine to actually beep when turned on, and if it did start, it would freeze earlier and earlier. (The last "successful" startup froze at the KDM login screen.)

My old power source was the 380W one that came with the Antec Sonata case. I haven't engaged myself in things like modern non-free gaming, so I think that wattage should have been plenty for me.

Well the lockups are back for me again. This time I'm pretty sure that the nvidia-legacy-drivers are responsible. I had to downgrade to nvidia-legacy, as the latest nvidia-drivers don't support my gpu anymore.
Anyway: Same lockups as posted by isolationism, amarok continues playing the current song, mouse moves fine. I cannot kill X with CTRL+ALT+Backspace. All I can do is SYSRQ+K teh x-server and start X again.
Switched back to some beta nvidia-drivers and hope that the lockups are again gone for me...

using legacy nvidia driver 7184 i had lockups with konqueror and the kontrol center in a similar
way as enkil describes it.
using 8774 there are no locks anymore! 8774 supports older nividia cards.
hth somehow

edit: because of a security issue it would be better to use 8776

I may have just encountered some new variant of our common problem.
Using fluxbox, i was talking with a friend over skype, when the screen and mouse froze as usual, or so I thought.
interesting to note is that the audio-conversation was not the least influenced by the freeze.

after sshing into the machine, I didn't see the expected X at 99.x CPU, but instead:
Code:

top - 02:41:28 up  1:16,  5 users,  load average: 2.18, 2.13, 1.83
Tasks:  90 total,   3 running,  85 sleeping,   1 stopped,   1 zombie
Cpu(s):  4.0% us,  9.3% sy,  0.0% ni,  0.0% id,  0.0% wa,  0.0% hi, 86.7% si
Mem:   1027968k total,  1002680k used,    25288k free,   108684k buffers
Swap:  1052216k total,        0k used,  1052216k free,   613900k cached

PID USER      PR  NI  VIRT  RES  SHR S %CPU %MEM    TIME+  COMMAND
    2 root      39  19     0    0    0 R 95.8  0.0  22:30.73 ksoftirqd/0
24756 lordhelm  15   0 79532  24m 9152 T  4.0  2.5   1:22.34 skype
    1 root      16   0  2572  576  488 S  0.0  0.1   0:00.39 init
...

and, to my dismay, (even as root)
Code:

bucephalos ~ # strace -p 2
attach: ptrace(PTRACE_ATTACH, ...): Operation not permitted

kill -9 ing the process (or, just in case, X) did nothing at all, so the magic SysRq-b had to jump in again.

My desktop locks up to from time to time but the mouse pointer is free as bird. Cant click anything thou and CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE doesnt work. I can ssh and kill the X session that way. And restart gdm to be able to use the computer infront of it. Anyways for me the lockups comes when i maximize or minimize with the buttons.. I can resize the windows by draging.. but not use the max/min buttons. So if I dont touch them its allright.

I havnt read the whole thread.. its pretty big, but if this is solved allready please let me know!

Oh and it only happens when im using xfce4. I think it happens in KDE to but dont remember. It works fine in fluxbox, so my theory is that it has something to do with composite or glx or something like that. Im also using nvidia-legacy drivers.

thnx

I found that this all started to happen after I upgraded to the modular X. I get two types of lock ups that I never had before. the lockup when the mouse moves, and the dead lock when the machine stops responding. I have to reboot in those cases. I use fluxbox and enlightenment and it happens in both. Firefox doesn't need to be running either. I could doing while running flac in a terminal window. Xorg 6.9 was much more stable and I never had this issue until I upgraded.

I use nvidia 6800 AGP
1.5 GB RAM
Intel 3.2 GHz processor.

I've just been reading some changelogs on kernel.org....

Looks like there's this Abdulla guy from Nvidia that's been posting many fixes on newer kernels for nvidia hardware. Most of them are appearing on kernels 2.6.18 e 2.6.19. I've no idea if those fixes would solve the issue, but it's worth a try. I know that the crashes also happen on ATI boards, but if I'm not mistaken seens like some of the fixes around the changelogs apply to both boards.

Is anyone using 2.6.18.5 or 2.6.19 kernels with Nvidia and still having crashes?

Well, I've definitely isolated my problem: Amarok's "analyzer" tools are definitely responsible for hanging X on my computer.

If I leave the analyzers on (just the little EQ bars, no fancy 3D stuff) and the Amarok window open, X crashes within a few hours.

If I minimise Amarok, no crashes.

Several days ago, I removed the EQ bar analyzer from the toolbar and clicked through all the analyzers in the player window until it said "Click for Analyzers" then left the window open -- and it hasn't crashed yet.

I realise most people probably don't leave Amarok up all the time, but ... if you do, and you're experiencing problems with X hitting 100% usage, you might try disabling all the analyzers and see if that doesn't fix the problem.

I think I've got the problem with X hard locks too. At least is seems to use 100% CPU, mouse can be moved but nothing else can be done.

Recently I noticed that it really often crashes when I'm typing something in the search bar in firefox :!: :?:

I'm getting alot of crashes after these recent ~x86 x11-* updates. opening a terminal and using less to view a file it locks up when reaching the end of the file. urxvt/xterm openbox/fluxbox/twm. Also locks up when taking a screenshot (xwd).

I noticed something strange when using the default /etc/X11/Xsession. in the terminals the prompt was printed out one character per line then it was normal on the next line. :?
Code:
u
s
e
r
@
h
o
s
t

~

$
user@host ~ $

Same problem after setting up a new user, and recompiling xorg-server.

I'm afraid it doesn't :(

I own a GeForce2 Ti myself and seems it is imposible to solve lockups since i'm forced to use 7184.

After X crashes i can ssh in, restart X then exit to get back to the VT. There i can see this message...
Code:
X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/evdev_drv.so: undefined symbol: xf86OSRingBell
This sounds like reasonable lead. It crashes when i reach the end of a file with less.

Edit: looks like bug #158442
using "kbd" driver as a workaround.

Hallo All !
I had the same freezes like described here. When I changed to gentoo-sources 2.6.18-r6, I changed my kernel config. I can not remeber exactly what I changed so here is my .config:

since i updated gnome to 2.16 i get freezes too. While "freezing" all applications stop responding to mouse events untill i switch around workspaces with keyboard. I was unable to get gnome freezed with kwin and windowmaker, but with metacity and beryl. With beryl wm, keyboard and mouse freeze together. So i wrote an shell script for udev, which kills window manager if i plug out my usb keyboard, so while by freeze i just unplug keyboard and then can start window manager and work with mouse and keyboard again and dont have to restart my computer :).

I have amd64, nvidia card. I installed gentoo from scratch and still get freezes.

add me to the list of sufferers too. o man this sucks ass so much. Ive been using nvidia cards for years and never had more than an occasional glitch quickly fixed by reverting to a different driver. This time it wont go away.

After much pain trying to work out what was wrong, when nothing was being logged, i have finally foudn a configuration that manages to spit this out into the logs:
Jan 8 02:22:17 vorpal NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 3, C 00000000 SC 00000004 M 000002fc Data 00000003
Jan 8 02:22:17 vorpal NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 28, L1 -> L0

So im getting these Xid errors now, that have been plaguing people for years, and which I have somehow avoided until now.

Ah what fun.

I finally found my cause of the lockups: x86_32 apps under x86_64. Before my system could lock up 5 times a day now it never locks up when using only pure x86_64 apps and libraries.

After a simple look through the thread it seems that other are affected by this, at least firefox-bin. Personally I'm affected by wine, cedega, mplayer-bin and some more. Has anyone filed a bug?

having the same problem with ff-2.0.1-bin & ff-2.0.1 on amd64

it seems to lock up (cursor moves, no keyboard, no response on any mouse actions)

however, when ssh into the apparently locked system and killing firefox, everything is back to normal

so I suggest it's ff-problem

Hi
when I try to X -configure it crashes. http://nanobin.nanosouffle.net/1994
I've searched the Internet for quite some time now but I didn't find anything,
perhaps one of you knows a solution to this problem.

Here is the logfile: http://nanobin.nanosouffle.net/1995

As you can see I also have an x86_64 system and the fglrx drivers installed.
thanks

:D :D :D :D :D
I've been suffering from drag-and-drop lockups with increasing frequency since upgrading to modular X and/or a 2.6 kernel. I finally got sufficiently aggravated to waste an evening on diagnosis, and fixed it at last.

Historically there seems to be no one-size-fits-all solution for this problem, but if you're having this problem with hardware similar to mine, this may help.
Hardware:
~ $ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0
Model:           Quadro2 MXR/EX/Go
IRQ:             11
Video BIOS:      03.11.01.26.14
Card Type:       AGP

This card is supported by nvidia-legacy-drivers.
Software:
~ $ uname -srm
Linux 2.6.17-gentoo-r8 i686

~ $ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version
NVRM version: NVIDIA Linux x86 Kernel Module  1.0-7184  Tue Aug  1 18:38:58 PDT 2006
GCC version:  gcc version 3.4.6 (Gentoo 3.4.6-r2, ssp-3.4.6-1.0, pie-8.7.10)

/etc/modules.d/nvidia:
alias char-major-195 nvidia
alias /dev/nvidiactl char-major-195

options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1

Here are the relevant portions (only) of xorg.conf. For me, the critical change was turning RenderAccel OFF.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf (portions):

Section "Module"
    Load       "glx"
#    Load       "dri"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Driver      "nvidia"
    Option      "RenderAccel" "false"
    Option      "NoRenderExtension" "false"
#    Option     "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
#    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    Option "RENDER" "true"
EndSection

I've never been happy with compositing effects on this HW/SW stack so I've left the Composite extension turned off. I did experiment with Composite enabled and it didn't seem to matter either way.

The nVidia README for the driver specifically mentions RenderAccel is an EXPERIMENTAL option and may cause instability. I never had trouble with it when running a 2.4 kernel, Xorg 6.8, and 6xxx-series nVidia drivers. Updating one or all of these made X prone to seize on any drag-and-drop between applications (DnD within any one app was fine, e.g., between Nautilus windows), and I'd long since forgotten RenderAccel was enabled.

Disabling RenderAccel doesn't seem to hurt performance at all, at least on (this?) older hardware with the legacy drivers. The frame rate reported by glxgears is unchanged, and Quake III also is as snappy as before. Beyond that and xscreensavers I pretty much don't care about OpenGL anyway.

Hope this info helps somebody.
