I have one of those 3C990 3XP network cards. No problem, I just have to compile my own kernel module with the source from 3COM's website. So, installing gentoo, I skipped the network setup, chrooted, and compiled the module in the stage1 environment.
I then went to VC2, and started to setup the network module.
Seems the kernel headers in the stage 1 install (gentoo 1.1a) are version 2.4.18. However, the kernel it boots from is 2.2.19. Since the kernel headers don't match the running kernel, the module can't load. I can't get networking, and I can't finish the install.
I'm going to try to work around this by downloading the kernel source to a drive, and manually extracting it to /usr/src/linux and compiling it against those headers.
However, it seems like a bug to me that the kernel headers on the stage1 install don't match the booting kernel.

I meant 2.4.19, not 2.2. |
