Anywho, I know this may seem a tad self-aggrandizing to ask for help to set up my desktop, but despite all my studying different configs, I'm at a loss to figure out the mechanics to get it all to work.

well, if you want to start from scratch, I wrote a tutorial on that subject.

http://fvwm.lair.be/viewtopic.php?t=188

Don't worry if it seems like a lot to learn. It is, but it gets easier once you have a few basics sorted out.

Best of luck

And furthermore, I really meant to PM that ... Talk about blowing your own trumpet

Ok they finally let me out so I can use the net again...

I was having a go with FvwmThumbnail and just need a sanity check (okay maybe sanity is too ambitious)...

I copy FvwmThumbnail perl to /usr/lib/fvwm/2.5.12/.
Make it executable, cut and paste your default config into .fvwmrc (doing my best to disable Taviso thumbnails).

That's it right? What else is there to do?

edit:

Computer says 'No'.

Can't load magick.so (Line 5) or find (Line 240) DynaLoad.pm (vt)

Okay so maybe I don't have the perl module but I've got Imagemagick (because taviso's stuff uses it albeit via a nasty shell spawn)

Any ideas?

That sounds like it should work. I created a $HOME/.fvw./mods directory and added it to ModulePath in my config, but otherwise that sounds good.

I think ImageMagick comes with the perl interface as part of the bundle - at least I don't remember installing it. What happens if you do a slocate magick.soi? I get

Code:
/usr/lib/ImageMagick-6.2.2/modules-Q16/coders/magick.so

And on that subject, what version of ImageMagick? I know it works under 6.2.2. I suppose I should test it under a couple of others as well.

It's just slow, Lucky. From what I can gather, modules only get implemented into the core FVWM release based on popularity. Shrugs.

I've been having some problems with miniicons... I have them set for different programs, and I have "DrawIcons always" set in FvwmIconMan. For some programs (Firefox and Gaim), the icons work perfectly... a button shows up in the FvwmIconMan for the program when I load it, and the button has the miniicon in it. But then for other programs (xterm and gvim), the button shows up in the FvwmIconMan, but the icons won't show up in the button... But then they do appear if I restart fvwm with that program running. All of the icons are in the same directory, and defined in the same way... Is there any way to get the miniicons for all programs to load when the program is opened? It would be a pain to have to hit 'restart fvwm' every time I wanted miniicons for all of my windows :?

Add EWMHMiniIconOverride to your icon styles. Also the quotes round the program class aren't necessary though they shouldn't hurt either.

I assume this is unnecessary if I place the module in /usr/lib/fvwm/2.5.12 with the others and make it executable.

Initially I got

Code:
bash: don't be silly command not found

Then later...

Code:
/usr/lib/ImageMagick-6.1.8/modules-Q16/coders/magick.so

Less than ideal.

That appears to have done the trick...

Unfortunately, I didn't make much investigation of the detail of the errors under the older version other than that posted here. I suppose I could unmerge...

That's cool. I've been meaning to change imageMagick versions and do some debugging anyway.

Glad its working for you

Hello everybody,

I discovered taviso's fvwm config file a few days ago. After trying to understand it, i finally tuned it for myself. But i have 2 questions:
1. How can i force the mouse pointer to keep taviso's look instead of the normal black pointer?
2. Where can i download his basic icon theme? I tried the way given in the link provided in the fvwm config file, but the url, but it keeps on telling me:
Code:
greg@Phoebe Backgrounds $ isoinfo -i d_man.php -J -x '/rep621/qnxinstall_w-2.4-x86-qnx.qpk' | \
> tar -zvf - -x 'qnx/qnxinstall_w/core-2.4/x86/usr/share/icons/topics'
isoinfo: Success. Read error on old image

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: qnx/qnxinstall_w/core-2.4/x86/usr/share/icons/topics: Not found in archive
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

I guess the URL is too old :( Do you know where i could find it?

Thanks in advance, and this window manager rules! :)

Added that, but it doesn't seem to do anything about the icons not showing up on the FvwmiconMan until it restarts :?. Anything else I could try? Would there be a way to just restart the FvwmIconMan whenever a new window (preferrably only new windows not on the skip list) opens?

Hmm, I just noticed you added $[fvwm_icon] twice to your imagepath, maybe that confuses Fvwm?

Maybe your IconMan starts too fast, try delayin startup with Schedule (when the above doesn't give any results, that is).

All in all it sounds a bit like: http://fvwm.lair.be/viewtopic.php?t=467, only that he has the problem with FvwmButtons.

Boroshan, have you gotten round to doing that animation thing to FvwmRingMenu? I'm not pushing, take your time!
I might beat my Mac downstairs if I get that and FvwmThumbnail to work... Is it suppose to Iconify the window or only take the screenshot? 'cause the screenshots get taken and saved, but the window isn't iconified...

EDIT:
I guess so, because I have:
Code:

Key F9    A A ThisWindow SendToModule FvwmThumbnail Thumbnail $[w.id]
Key F10   A A Iconify

And I only get the Thumbnail if I press F9 and then F10... even though I have:
Code:

DestroyModuleConfig FvwmThumbnail: *
*FvwmThumbnail: Refresh 5
*FvwmThumbnail: Directory /home/mirko_3/tmp/icons
*FvwmThumbnail: Mode Auto

Plus all that default class stuff you posted in your first post on the fvwm forums...

Once I get this to work, I'll try emulating exposè...

Just so folks know: I started a new job last week, and today I took my wife into hospital. So I may be a little longer than I planned in getting back to work on the modules.

I wrote them as proper modules so they'd work the same way as the rest of FVWM. It's no more complicated than FvwmPager really. Allthough it is picky about which version of ImageMagick it works with.

If you want a thumbnailer, there are a few thumbnail threads on the fvwm forum, including one written in C that looks like it knocks mine into a cocked hat, speed wise. I've not had a chance to play with it yet (see previous post) but you may find it easier to set up.

[edit] I see tBD already linked to two of them.

Right, but if I can get it to create a thumbnail with a manual command (which I bound to F9), it should mean that Imagemagick is not the problem right? Right now I can get it to create thumbnails with F9 and then, when I icon the window, the thumbnail is displayed; but it isn't creating the thumbnails like it should it auto mode....

I just thought some of you might like to know I've written a patch to turn on and off the stipple effect for sticky windows. If you're interested in it, you can follow the thread over at the fvwm-forums:

hmm I managed to get my fvwm up and running pretty smoothly, thanks to all the pages on the net, but I'm stuck with one problem here... :)

Is it possible to send an app from one virtual desktop to another?
I haven't found any pointers anywhere, but maybe I've overlooked something...

to see my current desktop, click here

TIA!!!

Look at:

Code:

MoveToPage
MoveToDesk

in 'man fvwm'.
