|

So I have X compiled and configured hapily, and I emerged WindowMaker onto my system.
I add wmaker to my .xsession file, but when when I run "startx" It always comes up in TWM. Any ideas why? This seems like it should be something blatently obvious, but I can't find it. |

ehm when u do "startx" you must put it in ur .xinitrc file. Ur .xsession file is when you use a session manager like kdm, gdm, ...
Also you might wanna use absolute path ... |

I'm not having the same problem, but it's certainly related. So, I have kdm come up, and I select kde-3.1, and after I type my password, I get no window manager and a single xterm in the upper-left of my screen.
I've put startkde in my .xsession file, I've set the XSESSION variable to kde-3.1 in both .bash_profile and .bashrc, I've verified that the kde-3.1 script in /etc/X11/Sessions is fine... what could be going wrong??
Interestingly enough, if I type 'startkde' in my single xterm, KDE comes up just fine. I just can't get it to load from the kdm screen. Any ideas?

sorry about that, guess I should have read more closely...
I know there is some stuff at the bottom of /etc/rc.conf as well regarding window manager type stuff. Have you tried umcommenting that? |

No worries. I was just glad to get a response so quickly.

Yea, I was all over rc.conf; it was correct.
I actually found the answer in this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=8553 Specifically, down in /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/kdmrc I was missing most of the entries in the [X-*-Core] section. After adding them, and changing the paths to 3.1, it worked like normal. I'm pretty sure it was the Session= value that made the difference.
Thanks again for the quick replies.

Cool. thanks for the follow up. I'll keep that in mind if I ever manage to get kde installed. |
