RoadRunn, can you clarify something for me. Once I've emerged the genoppix-scripts do I start with a stage 2 install at /usr/local/genoppix/source ? Following the HOWTO build a LiveCD from scratch with the link you provided at the start of this thread?

Or can I just use the genoppix scripts? I got a failed to emerge grub error when I just tried now. Also how easy would it be to integrate the ufed util into the scripts, the USE Flag Editor?

The genoppix scripts do everthing. I created these scripts as a scripted replacement and improvement to the steps on the HOWTO. The install script downloads a stage3 tar for i686. I havn't tried doing a stage2 because an i686 stage3 has worked on everything i have tried.

I have never heard of ufed but i'll give it a shot. Sounds like it should be easier if it does what it sounds like it should do :-)

well, using that grub, my CD goes to grub console. not sure what the problem is, do you have any idea? i'm trying to install vmware and try out my iso using vmware. i will let you know of any problems. thanks for all the help.

A few things to try.

in the /boot/grub directory of your workspace try "rm menu.lst;cp grub.conf menu.lst". The build script should have detected this and fixed it but just incase, we'll help it out.

Also in the grub console try "configfile /boot/grub/grub.conf" and see what errors it gives you. Also try executing the lines in your "Gentoo Linux" section one by one and see what errors come up (the kernel and initrd lines).

Getting any error messages from manually executing commands in the grub console will help point us in the right direction.

i got my cd to boot but it stops saying "No bootable media found. Waiting for new devices..."

a detailed error show is as below

Code:
>> Mounting filesystems

i think there is a problem in kernel compiling. not sure though. what do you think? just glad that i got the cd to boot up.

Ok. that's what I was afraid of with genkernel. Appearantly it didn't add all the support we need IN the kernel (not as modules). The following support must be IN the kernel, and actually come to think of it, you won't be able to use genkernel at all because the livecd needs a special initrd to setup the pivot root, and genkernel puts all of it's modules in its own initrd.

I can post my .config file for my kernel and do a manual kernel build if you would like.

how can i make the cd, like yours, so that it detects the video cards, sound cards, processors and everything, more like knoppix, and starts X accordingly.

the way i am making the cd, i think it will only work on my computer and my video/sound card.

sure, i'd love you get your config file. you said, live cd needs a special initrd to setup pivot root, how do i do that and what does it mean? if i remember correctly, when i compile a custom kernel, i dont make initrd.

i'd be great if you can post your config file and initrd for me. also, doesnt bootsplash use initrd?? how would i be able to use two initrd images?

Edit: never mind. i figured out how to test it.

Yep, it's ideally suited for this, give it a go and let me know what you think.

I'm really not doing that much special. I configured all of the ALSA support as modules durring the kernel config. Then I emerged livecd-tools and hwdata-knoppix with "X and livecd" USE keywords enabled. Then add autoconfig and mkxf86cfg to the default runlevel using rc-update. That will detect all of the ALSA sound modules and load their support, and create an xorg.conf file for your detected vid card and monitr.

The initrd needed for the livecd gets created using the createinitrd script (the one with the libgpm issue). You already have it, you just need to point grub's conf back to it. Should be /boot/initrd instead of /boot/initrd-2.6.xxxx.

Bootsplash does use an initrd. I was playing around with trying to combine the 2 for a bit but at first glance they require 2 different formats of initrd. I will try to pick them apart more but for right now I am not using bootsplash. The grub.conf file I am using is the one included with the genoppix scripts package. You should just be able to copy that over and use it as is.

My kernel config is below

You might need to enable more/different sound cards as modules for all of the sound cards that you want to support. I have narrowed my supported sound cards to a certain few. Other than that, as long as you are booting off an IDE cdrom, and have a minimum of 96MB RAM (tested it on 64 MB RAM with varried results) this config should work

Also I am still using the same package list that is listed on the first page of this post. I think that should get you about as close to my ISO as possible.

Now going to edit your make.conf. Make sure that you include 'livecd' in your USE statement.
Press any key to continue...

emerge'ing grub...failed. Make sure grub gets installed.
You are now ready to add the packages you want on your LiveCD.
Is this grub error normal?

Nope that shouldn't happen. Try to emerge grub and see what errors it comes with. That command was just 'emerge grub > /dev/null' so try an emerge -av grub and see if it still bombs.

It should be named .config I don't see any reason that it would read it unless there are no "read" permissions on the file (of course if you are doing this as root, that shouldn't matter).

Yea that's going to be a problem. you host system has to be the same as the target system. Not quite sure how to make a livecd for another architecture....

You can try that. I don't think there are any options that are x86 specific.

only problem now is that i cannot test 64-bit iso in vmware. i tried many 64-bit ditro iso in vmware but it only boots 32-bit distros. so i guess i'm back to wasting CDs.

I played around with qemu today. From their docs they say they can emulate x64. And it does boot from ISO's. I'm upgrading to the 0.70 version now and see what's up
