On Distro Watch.com it says:
Quote:
Gentoo Linux is a source-based distribution. While the installation media provide various levels of pre-compiled binary packages to get a basic Linux system up and running, the idea behind Gentoo is to compile all source packages on the user's computer. The main advantage of this is that all software is highly optimised for the computer architecture it is built on. Also, updating the installed software to newer version is a matter of typing a simple command. Many Gentoo users enjoy the fact the software packages kept in a central repository are usually kept highly up-to-date and available within days (sometimes even within hours) since their release by the upstream developers. On the other hand, installing Gentoo and turning it into a full-blown distribution with the latest graphical desktops, multimedia and development tools is tedious and long - count on several days even on a computer with a fast processor.

So why is KDE 3.4 taking soooo long to come out!
This is really frustrating!

Read up on the forums why this takes a long time.
Hint: split ebuilds.

Sounds like you would be more at home building your very own LFS.

Oh wait - no you wouldn't.

KDE 3.4 has been in portage since March 14th. Even earlier if you count the release candidates.

It's just masked. There are several threads available on these forums describing how to unmask something if you're not already familiar with the process.

I am currently running a masked KDE 3.4
It has very serious media issues...

Other distros are fine with KDE 3.4

Hoping the split eBuilds will be finished soon.

I have SuSE 9.3 and it is much nicer to use (regarding KDE 3.4),
I don't think there can be any argument about that.

But how do you mean visibility patches?

there are some speed improvements in kde 3.4 when compiled under gcc 3.4. there are also some instabilities :-P. i was wondering if stable kde 3.4 + unstable gcc 3.4 was more stable than unstable kde 3.4 + unstable gcc 3.4. :)

Moved from Desktop Environments to Gentoo Chat since this isn't a support request.
