|
|
In the past, I've named my FreeBSD and Linux servers after Interplay/Bioware games: Neverwinter, Icewind (a game which I found boring, but makes a good server name), and Planescape. I've also used "Deep thought" from Douglas Adams "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." In the story, Deep Thought was an extremely powerful computer that, when initially turned on for testing (without any attached data banks), it began with, "I think therefore I am." and by the time anyone managed to turn it off, it had deduced the existence of rice pudding and income tax.
My current Gentoo system is named "Tiamat" after a dragon in AD&D, and my FreeBSD server is named "Blackstar" after a ship from Babylon 5. I've also used "Crusader" after an Army artillery project (which in turn was named after the crusaders of midievil Europe) and "Palladium" after a very nice audio receiver made by Klipsch. Thanks to handsomepete for the topic idea.
So, what interesting system names have others come up with? Hopefully more interesting than one friend's: "System1," "System2."
Renamed title from So, what did you name YOUR computer(s)? --pjp _________________ The greatest deeds are still undone, the greatest songs are still unsung... |

My desktop system is called Shadow (Crime does not pay! The shadow knows! ); the other one will be called kane (Karl Edward Wagners sword & sorcery kind-of-anti hero). I'm afraid my gateway is called, hmn, gateway...,
a friend of mine named his gateway zerberus, nice but common..
Oh, at university we had joyce, beckett,..
I could go on forever, stopping now ,
interesting topic
regards,
tom |

At home, computers have the name (or nick) of their main user.
At work we use animals names for workstation (dolphin, tiger, ...)
and volcano names for servers (soufriere, fournaise, ...) _________________ Tell a man there are 300 billion stars in the universe and he'll believe you.

I have my router/server setup as a DNS server so they are named <host>.home and I have DNS on each comp setup to search the home domain. So ping viper pings viper.home... kinda stupid, but I thought it was cool.
- Server/router - viper
- My P4 - flex
- Family computer - office
- P180 wannabe - shadow
- Laptop - craptop
I remember a post @ DSLR that had the same question, one guy had all his computers named stuff that meant "nothing", for example: zero, null, zip, nada, zilch. _________________ - Kyle Manna

I used to have skynet and hagnet as computer names but right now im reworking my computers and probably changing names when i make a DNS server. Thinking about greek mythology names, Aegis, Athena, Amaltheia, Apollo, Hephaestus etc.. Im especially fond of Athena after reading Cryptonomicon .
oh and, here is a post about Server naming conventions on Slashdot. Gives some good ideas to those without. |

Well, sounds like my setup here at home is kinda dull now that I look at everyone elses names!
My Sparcstation-10 is called (surprisingly) sparc10
My Celeron 450 is called (surprisingly) celeron
My laptop is called... dum dum de dum! laptop
Anyone guess what my router is called?
lol
cirius
guess I was feeling kinda wild that day
I think once my 1.8ghz machine gets here (piece by piece through the mail) I'm going to restructure.
considering the temperature of the newer processors, I'll probably name that one Agigi. |

Random words that came to me, mostly as a description of the system or it's job...
Home desktop = fringe [no idea. my first 386 DOS system was named this too]
Home devel www server = ordeal [first time I ever tried linux.]
Work desktop = manic [heh. its helps describe work]
Work helpdesk/netmon server = trenchant
Work DNS server = resolve [least "creative" I guess ]
Main www/mail server = caustic
Backup mail relay = burnt [my assistant fried the processor when he forgot to put the cooling fan on it correctly. seemed fitting ]
Laptop = roam |

BTW, this should probably go into OT forum... _________________ Face it, we are all noobs.
On the box it said it was designed for Win XP or better, so why won't it work with Linux? |
