root password still scrambling after install

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

root password still scrambling after install

Post by veedubmoz » Sat Apr 23, 2005 7:03 pm

Searched for this topic with to no luck.

Well i just finished a trouble free install of the 2.6-r6 kernel/etc and had set the root password using 'passwd' after chrooting during install.im not a n00b at this and i noticed when i boot up now it is still running the (assumed) init script that says "scrambling root password for security" which now i cant log in with root or su. anyone have a suggestion as to how to remedy that or why that is happening? i looked in conf.d and didnt see any scripts there that looked like they were the culprit.

thanks!

veedubmoz,

Did you leave the liveCD in the drive ?

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

nope. it is *definitely* booting on its own. do you know how the password scrambling is initiated? since its one of the last operations it performs during bootup i would assume it is an init script or something..

Look at /etc/init.d/ for hints.
It may have been added somehow (fresh install, don't know home come...) to /etc/conf.d/local.start.
