Is it possible to convert MP3's to the format used by the iPod line of players and simply copy them over as regular files to the iPod?
I use my MP3 player this way -- in other words, I just drag and drop a mix of MP3's to the player, which connects to the computer like any other pen drive does (formatted FAT of course). I don't want to invest in an iPod unless I can use it under Linux. If the iPod has to have other special files (like directory info, etc.) or if it has it's own proprietary file system, then I can see this not working very well. I really don't want to run iTunes under WINE or deal with some other program either. I like drag --> drop --> unmount --> go (sounds sort of like stop/drop/roll doesn't it?).
Thanks,

The iPod can play MP3s, so that's one problem solved. As for putting stuff on there, I use an itunes replacement called gtkPod, which works very well. I believe there may be a drag and drop system for the KDE file browser using kio-slave, but I'm not sure.

I use my iPod mini with GTKPod and it works wonderfully. The iPod connects and mounts like a drive and then you use GTKPod to put music on it, arrange playlists, and etc. |
