|
|
I am trying to install Gentoo on a Dell D410 Laptop, however the CD-ROM is a USB2.0 device. The Dell BIOS supports booting from USB, however when I attempt to boot the CD it fails:
First, when attempting to find the CD to boot, it gets this:
Code: | Could not find CD to boot, something else needed!
mount: Mounting /newroot/dev on /dev failed: No such file or directory |
Then, after some other work (keymaps, device-mapper raid, Volume Groups, etc.), I get this:
Code: | The root block device is unspecified or undetected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
boot() :: |
I believe I have determined the CD-ROM is /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/1-2/1-2.3/1-2.3:1.0/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0, but /dev hasn't been populated so I don't know what to point to. I'm imagining if I were smarter with mknod I could fake it, but not sure how to do that.
I'd appreciate any input anyone might have.
Thanks!

Ok, have some more information. I created the device node by hand:
I was able to get the CD-Boot to continue by hitting Ctrl-D and typing /dev/sr0 for the boot device. After that, I get this output:
(Hand typed, please overlook typos.)
Code: | mount /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mkdir: Cannot create directory `/newroot/tmp': Read-only file system
mknod: /newroot/dev/console: No such file or directory
>> Bootingpivot_root: pivot_root: No such file or direction
./linuxrc: 497: /tmp/.initrd/bin/[: not found
/linuxrc: 497: /tmp.initrd/bin/[: not found
/linuxrc: 497: /tmp.initrd/bin/[: not found
./linuxrc: 504: cannot open dev/console: No such file
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! |
Note that, as I mentioned above, /newroot/dev is empty.
Still looking for ideas...
