Hello,

I have a huge problem there!

When I was a windows user quite a long time ago now, I was backing up all the pictures as .ace files... Today I needed to dig my CDs archives to find some old pics... But I can't unace the files :? :(

Basically, if I try to unace it, I get this error:
Quote:
root@ananke /mnt/80gb/laptop/Archives Photos # unace x 1999_12\ -\ Cauterets.ace
UNACE v1.2 public version

Processing archive: 1999_12 - Cauterets.ace

Analyzing
File compressed with unknown method. Decompression not possible.

Error occurred

So I checked the file:
Quote:
root@ananke /mnt/80gb/laptop/Archives Photos # file 1999_12\ -\ Cauterets.ace
1999_12 - Cauterets.ace: ACE compressed archive version 20, from Win/32, version 20 to extract, solid

And I decided to see if I was able to use any other option of the unace... and the weird thing! Is that I'm able to view the files inside the .ace !!!
Quote:
root@ananke /mnt/80gb/laptop/Archives Photos # unace l 1999_12\ -\ Cauterets.ace
UNACE v1.2 public version

Does anyone knows a way to get around?? I don't have any windows box available so there is no way to unace it on such computer :(
btwn I checked portage to see if it does not exist another version of unace, but does not seems so :(
Quote:
root@ananke /mnt/80gb/laptop/Archives Photos # equery list -p unace
[ Searching for package 'unace' in all categories among: ]
* installed packages
[I--] [ ] app-arch/unace-1.2b-r1 (1)
* Portage tree (/usr/portage)

Thanks in advance
Ludo in deep sh*t :(

I'm wondering what the reason for the first error msg might be. Have you write access to whereever you want to extract these pics? If you are lucky the "Decompression not possible" stuff is just printed because the program gets confused on the first error.
As for being able to view the contents of the archive: I'm not 100% sure but I think, the file list is stored seperately from the actual content. So it might be possible to get a listing of the files while the real data is long gone.

Depending on the size of the .ace file and what's on those pictures you might want to put it online somewhere and ask people to extract it for you (possbily under Windows).

The could not create directory is there because the directory already exist from the previous attempt, but even if you remove it, it still does not want to uncrompress. So you skip this error, it is unrelated, I should have been more careful in the copy/paste ;) (N.B.: I will edit the first post to remove it)

And regarding the zips, there is around 9Gb of pics... so I guess we will forget the put online idea ;) eheh

Could that be a bug? or?

Let's see if others also experience that

Ok, since I was not the only one having this problem with the ebuild I tried to download it... and guess what... it works, so the ebuild must have a problem :(

so what to do:
Code:
#emerge -aC unace
#cd /tmp
#wget http://freshmeat.net/redir/unace/10920/url_tgz/linunace22.tgz
#tar zxvf linunace22.tgz
#mv unace /usr/bin/

Ok, and now it works with unace 2.2 which is a much newer version.

Legoguy, Could you try that and see if it solves the problem for you too?

HTH

Well I should have noticed that earlier. You are using unace 1.2, while winace is at 2.6 atm. It isn't really surprising that such an old version can't extract archives made with newer versions of (win)ace.
If you look into the changelog of the unace ebuild you will see that there was a 2.2 ebuild but it got removed some time ago due to some security bug that couldn't be fixed because the 2.2 is binary only while 1.2 is open source.
That's really annoying because the number of archives that 1.2 can extract will only shrink with time till it becomes totally useless. Would be nice if they brought back the 2.2 ebuild but hardmasked it due to security risks (that's what was done for the ut ebuild).

I suppose in that case you can just grab the 2.2 ebuild/files from the CVS Attic..

Hmm you can get the newest unace version from
unace download suse version

The realy funny thing is that there you can find the src.rpm too.
with
Code:
rpm2targz

it gets to something better the you can unpack the sources and compile.
please take note that the license is given as "as-is"!

Maybe someone can build an ebuild? -I do not know where i find some howtos to make this by myself :(

EDIT: Argh. Someone took the 1.2 and renamed it to 2.5 So the hole stuff is a false Alarm of happyness :(
The RPMs are "faked"

I had an identical problem... downloading and copying unace 2.2 solved the issue, could we have v2.2 on portage?

Even a proprietary binary version with fetch restriction if required?

Now the complete ace stuff is not in Portage due critical security holes which are not fixed yet.
It was on Portage so you migth find it in the cvs.

You can use the 2.5 from suse. like i wrote above there is a 3.5 binary there. Butr this one to has security holes :(

The savest to me seems to be wine with winrar and get rid of these ace stuff.

The reason that leaded to removing it from Portage, and the needed ebuild, can be found here.
