Are laptop fans controlled in hardware or software? I want to install Gentoo on my laptop (a Compaq TC1000 Tablet PC), but I don't want to fry it after using it for a half hour. I basically want it to work like it does in Windows, only turning on when it starts to overheat. Software control would be nice but not really necessary. |

Generally, systems today are ACPI-based which has the BIOS provide information about core hardware such as video, battery, ac, processor, fan, button, and thermal monitor. As long as you compile and load those modules or include them directly into the kernel, you should be okay. Even if not, a good BIOS will eventually notice that the OS isn't doing anything about it and take over before it is too late. |

My current laptop does it through the hardware, my old laptop did it through hardware... So generally speaking the hardware takes care about it. |

You should be fine, my laptop (dell D600) controls the fan from bios unless you specifically overide its settings (the only prog I've found that can do this is windows anyhow. |

Yep, mine happily cycles my fan up and down as required too. I don't know what happens without ACPI compiled in, but it would be silly not to include it on a laptop. _________________ What are you, stupid? |
