I've just learned about the existence of .Xdefaults, after using linux for over two years now  . I could really kick myself...
Overlooking the forum, i believe that a good .Xdefaults file could really add to your general desktop niceness, without expense.

Since a torsmo tips and tricks topic has recently been posted, i thought it might be a good idea to do the same for .Xdefaults.

Stuff like aterm transparency, colours, xft fonts,... are all very much in place here.

So post, post, post...

Code:
XTerm*jumpScroll:       true
XTerm*multiScroll:      true
XTerm*scrollTtyOutput:false
XTerm*scrollKey:       true
XTerm*foreground:    white
XTerm*background:   black
XTerm*saveLines:     10000

xdvi*background:       white
xdvi*expert:              true
xdvi*keepPosition:      true

xfig*customization:    -color

My very basic Xdefaults. I'm not sure were the xterm scroll settings came from, but I believe they stop a program from waiting on the xterm to show the output -> compiles go faster, because it doesn't have to wait on your xterm to finish the output.

Use .xdefaults to change the cursor theme. For example, I'm using the whiteglass cursor theme and I enlarged the size of the cursor .
Code:
# Xcursor Resources
Xcursor.theme: whiteglass
Xcursor.size: 25
