What is the license status for these icons?
Can they be distributed along with Gentoo? |

I can't speak for the others who have made icons here, but the once I have made you can do what ever you want with. I've "stolen" all the artwork anyway and I'm not even shure if they are legal, but if the orginal makers of the art does not have any problems with the icons, feel free to distribute my contributions however you see fit.
If you realy need them to be released under a license give me a suggestion. |

Your icons are truly elegant and worthy of publishing along with Gentoo in distributions. However, I think it is difficult for people (packagers, distributors, etc.) to use the icons, unless the license terms are known. Graphics are a little different than source code, so I suggest each author clarify their license.
For example, this popular license set (used by Wikipedia and many others) requires only a couple minutes to make a selection of license terms: Creative Commons Licenses
Of course, everyone is already familiar with the GPL, so that is another option.
In my humble opinion, ideally, each icon set would clearly identify the license type/terms, and the author history (original author + authors who made changes, if any). Then I would know if I can use the icon set, and make certain each author receives due credit. Also, it would be nice if each author included some sort of logo or insignia with an URL to their home page. Then we could have a slick credits page where users can learn more about the authors and their works, and also maybe check out the author's home page and find new/additional graphics and icons.
Hmmm ... I guess I'm proposing a simple author registry:
o Graphic/Icon Set Name
o Original Author
o URL/Email for Original Author
o License Terms (e.g. GPL or Creative Commons)
o List of authors contributing changes / additions under the license terms
o URL/Email for each contributing author
Is this too complicated?
Would people prefer to just handle things via email?
Thanks for your input! |

Thanks Wolven!
By adding a license, people can now legally use your gorgeous icons by attributing you and including a simple HTML link to the license (as you did here: http://www.ionbox.org/images/icons/ ). I didn't realize just how many icons you had until now ... WOW!
I just hope the other icon authors also release their icons under a license that allows fellow Gentooites to use them.
I wish I had a screenshot of the first web application I created back in 1995. There were no artists in the team, and we actually went live with some placeholder icons I made .. shudder.
The icons were so bad it was hilarious |

I'm impressed when I see the use of free software to reduce the users freedom.
#gentoo channel is the only one that forces tor users to need request voice, and isn't possible post a message and these forums. Simply because people were using Tor to abuse the forums.

Wolven,
Have you ever considered making themes for ROX, KDE, Gnome, etc? _________________ Blog

I have kind of started making my own icon theme for KDE and/or Gnome. It is not the bubble icons though, because I want to make something that is 'mine.' The problem is that I can't draw anything, (because I suck at drawing ) so I use real images. Here you can see a screenshot of some of the icons. I've made a few more after this shot was taken, but it's far from finished. It's hard to find all the images I need with the same look and feel and I haven't figured what to do with the mime type icons yet.
If you meant making a theme out of the bubble icons, then I haven't really thought about it. If any one wants to make a theme out of the bubbles they are free to use my additions and I'm shure the other contributors feel the same. I'll even help out making the missing icons.
It shouldn't be to hard to make a theme for ROX though, but I don't know how to make one for KDE or Gnome yet. |

very nice iconset, and personally I think they're better than the bubbles!
Hopefully you'll release them soon  _________________ {Linux User #333296}

Here you go: DbVisualizer. It's just the same icon you provided, but in a bubble.

I'd like to request an icon for File Roller. Unless it's already been requested somewhere in this very long thread. If that's the case, then I merely second the request.
These icons look absolutly great. Stunning, even. Far, -far- above the usual level of linux icons. So good, I just spent two hours redoing my fvwm config file to use these icons exclusivly. By chance, they happen to mesh very well with the theme I've made.
Well, there is one icon I'm using that isn't from this set.... but I've already requested it be added ;)
Excellent job, all who are responsible. _________________ No. |

The default file roller icon (You know, the little bull-dozer) would be great. I'm not terribly picky, begger's not being choosers, and whatnot. ;)
Did you want it posted here (can we post images to the forum without uploading somewhere else?), uploaded somewhere and linked to, or will my poor description be enough?
If you have file roller emerged, you can find it at "/usr/share/pixmaps/file-roller.png". Or at least, that's where I found it. I assume it was installed with file-roller. I'm helpful, arn't I?
And can you tell me how you acheived that bubble? Photoshop, PSP, The GIMP? What filter/plugin was used? _________________ No. |
