then i try to boot my new ultra5 it fails with vfs unable to open device hda4

i have copied the kernel und the initramdisk from the gentoo livecd 2005.0
the silo.conf is ok it loads the kernel and the ramdisk.

when i boot from cd with gentoo-2.4 root=/dev/hda4 all works fine

Code:
cat /boot/silo.conf
partition = 1         # Boot partition (= root partition)
root = /dev/hda4      # Root partition
timeout = 150          # Wait 15 seconds before booting the default section

image = /kernel-2.4.29
  label = linux
  #append="initrd=/kernel-2.4.29.igz"
  append="initrd=/kernel-2.4.29.igz root = /dev/hda4  noudev devfs"
image="/gentoo-2.4"
        label="gentoo-2.4"
        append="initrd=/gentoo-2.4.igz root = /dev/hda4 noudev devfs"

Code:
cat /etc/fstab
/dev/hda1               /boot           ext2            noauto,noatime          1 1
/dev/hda4               /               ext2            noatime                 0 0
/dev/hda2               none            swap            sw                      0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0      /mnt/cdrom      iso9660         noauto,ro               0 0

none                    /proc           proc            defaults                0 0
none                    /dev/shm        tmpfs           defaults                0 0

Your disk setup is the same as mine.
I could be wrong but I think silo.conf should be located in /etc - at least it has always been on my system.

Also shouldnt "image = /kernel-2.4.29 " actually be "image=/boot/kernel-2.4.29

Have a look in /etc , you might find there is a default version of silo.conf their that your system is trying to use.

Have you re-run /sbin/silo?
