The new name sucks.

If they'd done this 7 days ago I'd have thought it was an April Fools joke...

IMO, "Mandiva" without the "r" would have sounded nicer. :)

Yeah I didn't realise that... That would have made it the gay distro of choice.

I agree, Mandrake deserves its place at the table, and to be fair, over the last 3 years it's certainly contributed to the notion that "desktop Linux" is useable, feasable, approachable etc etc........

Anyone else think Ubuntu can potentially outclass Mandrak^H^Hiva in these areas?

No, mandrake is probably the best distro for first time users

I havn't used ubuntu, but I did start out as a Mandrake user. I liked it, and it is good for a first distro. (Well, technically not my first, byt the first I used for any length of time...)

Well it seems to me Ubuntu comes pretty close to Mandrake in ease-of-use, though I can't say exactly how close since I don't use either distro. Rather, I support people who use them.

I started recommending Ubuntu over Mandrake to first time linux users ~3 months ago, and the results have been very pleasing from my POV. No more rpm hell or jumping through hoops to satisfy basic needs like a working mplayer and NTFS read access! Rather, I can apply the same simple know-how I use when I occasionaly administer a few Debian stable machines.

If I never urpmi again, it'll be too soon.
