And... it should be fixed now. ufed needs dialog version 1.0.20050206, but this wasn't reflected in the ebuild.
PS: You still had /etc/make.conf.old, right? Or was that messed up too somehow? |

Now that you mention it
I suspect it clobbered more than make.conf, but I had several other make.conf backups ..and a backup distro on another disk, AND an Acronis backup for those rare disasters... and come to think of it, a test backup of /etc using kdsl and packet-writing to a dvd+rw... I am a strong believer in backup 
Anyway, I'll upgrade to the ~86 version of dialog.

Edit OK, I upgraded dialog to 1.0.20050206, re-emerged ufed, tried everything, including save, and my make.conf still looks good
