Hi!

As I understand it, when I run emerge, it randomly selects on of the mirrors to download from.

I happen to be on the same LAN as a portage mirror (libre.oit.umass.edu) and I get full 10mbit downloads from this mirror. (this mirror is blocked from off-lan access)

In other words, it dowsn't make sense for me to download from any other mirror. Is there any way I can force emerge to use this mirror?

Thanks,
Matt

There are two sets of mirrors, and I'm not sure which you're talking about. rsync mirrors are used when you "emerge sync": you can set those by defining SYNC in make.conf. Source mirrors are used when you download sources: those can be set by defining GENTOO_MIRRORS in make.conf.

Nice. I'm not really sure how to do that. Is there any documentation on this? (or just an example make.conf would do ;)

Thanks again,
Matt

Look at make.globals for samples.

Thanks for your help.

I have GENTOO_MIRRORS set up so it works correctly, but SYNC is casuing me some trouble.

in make.conf, my sync line looks as follows.

SYNC="ftp://libre.oit.umass.edu/gentoo/portage"

However when I run emerge sync, I get the following error:

# emerge sync
!!! rsync setting: ftp://libre.oit.umass.edu/gentoo/portage not
recognized; exiting.

Do you by any chance know what I am doing wrong?

I really appreciate all your help in this thread an dothers.

Thanks,
Matt

actually, I found that the rsync on that server is under /gentoo/rsync. I tried that instead, but I still get the error.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Matt

Protocol should probably be "rsync://", not "ftp://".
