I have an unusual problem and I'm not exactly sure where the problem is.

I recently installed gentoo on a new server. I moved my collection of MP3's from my old server to my new server. All of my old MP3's play fine with XMMS.

Yesterday, I emerged grip and ripped & encoded a new CD. The problem is that XMMS doesn't play the new MP3's properly. I get random pops throughout the music. The interesting thing is that noatun plays the new MP3's as well as the old ones fine.

I am sure that the problem is not on the ripping side since I am able to rip my CD's and play the resulting wav file using any number of players including XMMS.

Initially I thought the problem was with the encoder, so I replaced lame with bladeenc. I have the exact same problem regardless of which encoder I use.

At this point I'm in a quandary. Is the problem with XMMS? If so, why will it play my old MP3 collection. Is the problem with the encoder? If so, why do I have the same problem with 2 different encoders. I'm also worried that I have the potential to create MP3's that only play on certain players. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
