Does anyone know if anyone is working on ebuilds for ~amd64 for the OO2 beta? Putting aside all the silly noise over use of Java, it us a big improvement and I would like to get it over to 64 bit asap.

If someone is working on this, can I help in any way? If not, can someone point me to the right resources to start on this myself? Thanks.

Sure, it works fine. There`s just a little problem with symlinks (in my opinion)... so try to run it in this way:
Code:
/opt/OpenOffice.org/program/soffice.bin&

I'd like to try it on my amd64 also.

Try searching bugzilla to see if anyone is working on an ebuild.

If you decide to go for it, I'd by happy to help out with the ebuild.

It's in portage...
Code:

darkstar ~ # etcat -v openoffice-bin
[ Results for search key           : openoffice-bin ]
[ Candidate applications found : 4 ]

 Only printing found installed programs.

*  app-office/openoffice-bin :
        [ ~ ] 1.1.1 (0)
        [   ] 1.1.3 (0)
        [ ~ ] 1.1.4 (0)
        [  I] 1.9.87 (0)

hmm .. it does not seem to like the 64bit blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.01. any tricks for compatibility?

[edit]

Downloaded the 32bit sun jre and installed it in /opt by hand ... in OOo: Tools->Options Java: Add this.
Seems to work fine :-)

Go into the options and turn off the JRE. it loads up _way_ faster this way.

Maybe I was not clear enough. I want to get OO 2.0 Beta COMPILED in 64 bit glory - not run 32 bit binaries. The version of openoffice in openoffice-bin is, if I am not mistaken, compiled 32 bits and therefore using multilib, or is the -bin version actually 64 bit?

OOo 2 is working very well here on AMD64. I've disabled Java and it indeed loads like 10 times faster. Does anybody know when there will be a PPC binary available (I'd like to switch it on my other machine too)? Also, are there any informations yet how OOo 2 will handle i18n and if it will compile on AMD64/PPC (OOo 1 doesn't compile on AMD64 at all).

OOo 2.0-pre does not compile on AMD64, too, don't get your hopes too high that the final version will. PPC on the other hand should work fine (as 1.1.x does)

What the hell are they doing with there code that it doesn't compile on AMD64? If it does compile on a completely different arch, shouldn't it compile on the same arch with some advancements? Well anyway, any hope for a PPC binary soon?

It's a 32bit binary version. I'm sorry, but I thought u know that it's not still possible to compile it on amd64 (at least.. it's possible with some serious hacks), so I wasn't too much clear about it :/

Someone is working on a 64 bit build. Like the 32 bit binary builds, it takes almost 4 minutes to load whether java is enabled or not. Plus it crashes whenever I scroll in a file selection box. 32 bit 1.9.87 crashed when I tried to save changes in a .sxw that I had created in OO-1.1.4.

Personally, I'm going to wait until they get things figured out a bit better. 1.1.4 loads in about 5 seconds, so I can open it, do some quick work and close it before beta even starts up. For me that makes it a no-brainer.

Thanks for the link ronmon. I guess I will keep waiting.. I too have had many problems with the 32 bit binary. Really should have a 64 bit build, glad someone is working on it.

I emerged the hardmasked openoffice-bin-1.9.87 package. Now I have start problems on my Gentoo AMD64 2005.0:

Code:
moritz% /opt/OpenOffice.org/program/soffice.bin
zsh: no such file or directory: /opt/OpenOffice.org/program/soffice.bin
moritz% oowriter
/opt/OpenOffice.org/program/soffice: line 163: /opt/OpenOffice.org/program/javaldx: No such file or directory
/opt/OpenOffice.org/program/soffice: line 224: /opt/OpenOffice.org/program/pagein: No such file or directory
/opt/OpenOffice.org/program/soffice: line 235: /opt/OpenOffice.org/program/soffice.bin: No such file or directory

What can I do?

hmm well... using sun 32bit jre as i mentioned above and openoffice-bin loads in < 3 sec. on my amd64 3000.
I had really *slow* loading times without the 32bit jre since OO always started the 64bit blackdown vm which then took 100% cpu for some time ... until it gave up reporting that it did not find a good vm.

How did you install the 32bit JRE on your AMD64?
Could you please explain me?

Cheers!
