anyone knows about integrating anaconda installer into a DVD?
The idea is to unpack a stage4 into a partition, unpack portage tree, sync it, install grub using grub-install.
A good news for AMD64 users is that I've ordered an AMD Athlon64 3500+ and a MSI K8N Neo2, I think that I'll start to create RR4 LiveCD for AMD64 in a month. I'm alone and I'd like to have someone that could help me. I can send the entire chroot environment via ordinary mail to anyone that can help me. _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

first of all, I'll have to setup a new amd64 gentoo on a temporary partition, I only hope that my actual gentoo (compiled with -march=athlon-xp) can work for a week or less with my new amd64 processor (in this case in 32bit), the time I need to recreate my actual OS. I know, maybe I have to recompile the kernel to include nforce3 drivers, but it doesn't matter. _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

Hi!
I downloaded the Minimal Live CD, booted from it and tried to configure my network adapter with net-setup. But when i try to navigate to an URL with links, it can't find any hostnames.
Can anyone help me configuring my net correctly?
Thanks

Yeah ok, you (and me) only have to wait that I set up an amd64 gentoo, tweak catalyst 1.1.1 to reflect my needs (now I use catalyst lxnay edition ( ) 1.0.9), and then I think that I'm ready. I've heard that some packages can't be compiled with amd64 arch (in 64bit mode), I hope that I'll solve everything. _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

well, that's the VERY preliminary changelog:
Quote: | 2.20:
updated kde to 3.3.2
updated gnome to 2.8.2
updated k3b to 0.11.18
* updated xfce 4.2 to rc2
* updated xfce4 customization
added athcool
added net-analyzer/macchanger
added auto-scamble root password
added ondemand cpufreq scaling governor into kernel
kde acpi off
xfce4 acpi off
tweak fastboot
more scsi drivers |
I'm wondering if it will be possible to recompile everything from 32bit to 64bit. linux_on_the_brain? _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

Not exactly what your asking, but I can tell you this. Since I started using the amd64 platform I have used gnome, fluxbox, without problems. The only 2 things I can think of that have given me problems is splashutils and wine-bin, neither of which matter much. |

lxnay: Could you provide your .spec files and .config, please? I am trying to make a customized livecd for my linux user group's installfest this spring and I would like to base it off of your RR4 livecd. Also, have you thought about using the gentoo portage wiki http://gentoo-wiki.com to help track and manage development and documentation? I think it would be a lot easier than having to navigate through 20 pages of posts to this forum. Just an idea. Keep up the good work. _________________ -SmokesLikeaPoet

Yes I can public .spec files but stage1 can't be used anymore, I usually run catalyst stage2 and if I want to change something I chroot into stage1.
How can I use gentoo wiki? _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

lxnay, once you post the .spec file , can you give a quick rundown of exactly how to setup the stuff required to rebuild the CD?
I've looked through the Catalyst HowTO at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_build_a_LiveCD and it seems a tad vague.
Or, is it simply easy enough to unpack the CD into a place I can chroot into and use the .spec file to regen the CD image?
And, secondly, is there any trouble in creating a DVD image? I'd like to add a bunch of packages for doing software development too .
Finally, Any ideas how one can maintain a parallel version of the LiveCD? I'm very interested in keeping in sync with your version, I just wanna add packages to it
Thanks |

Yeah Gserack, that was the same howto that I was trying to follow. It seems something is broken and out of date because I can't seem to build a stage1 2004.3. The howto was never completed and the last update was back in December. I'm going to try and track down the author to ask him directly.

I guess you've never wiki'ed before? All the pages on the Gentoo Portage Wiki http://gentoo-wiki.com are user editable, you don't even have to register if you don't want to. You can also create new pages. Every page has a discussion page in which you can keep a change log and bug posts. With your permisson, I can get you started by migrating the parent post of this thread to the wiki format, since I already know the syntax pretty well. From then on you can edit the page as updates take place. I suggested the wiki because it's alread a repository for user-authored Gentoo documentation. _________________ -SmokesLikeaPoet

|
I just downloaded your latest RR4 cd to install a gentoo stage3 tarball with.
Code: | tecnico@lxnaycd /mnt/gentoo $ tar -xjvpf stage3...tar.bz2
tar: Missing command, must specify -x -c -u -r -t -copy -n or -diff.
Usage: tar cmd [options] file1 ... filen
Use tar -help
and tar -xhelp
to get a list of valid cmds and options.
Use tar H=help
to get a list of valid archive header formats.
Use tar diffopts=help
to get a list of valid diff options.
|
So I began to investigate...
Code: | # which tar
/usr/bin/tar
# ls -l /usr/bin/tar
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Dec 11 14:09 /usr/bin/tar -> star
# find / -name tar -print
/mnt/livecd/bin/tar
/mnt/livecd/usr/bin/tar |
Hmm...
Code: | # cd /mnt/gentoo
# /bin/tar -xjvpf stage3....tar.bz2 |
Works now !!!
Whats up with this *STAR* binary ??? How come the regular /bin/tar isn't used by default ? |

Hey, that's incredible, some time ago I've had to hack catalyst scripts for the same problem, but I didn't know why tar didn't work anymore. So this is the problem? I'll fix it in the next release ! Thank youi again. _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

Yes I know, catalyst documentation is very very bad and vague. Now I don't have time to explain how catalyst works but I'll do that tonight.
You can burn 2.10 ISO to a DVD+-RW (that's the way I test new ISOs). I suggest you to create a chroot environment, (that's the same of creating and building a new gentoo), then use a catalyst stage2 spec file to compile the kernel (with genkernel) and build the ISO. Tonight I'll post my catalyst stage2 spec file.
Yes, if you want to be the mantainer of gentoo wiki, you're welcome I'm a little busy, I work in the IT sector, I'm writing a review, I'm testing new stuffs for the next LiveCD and I'm preparing my new AMD64 computer (whoa, I love AMD ). _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

I can share to you the next chroot environment via bittorrent but it's 2Gb big (.tar.bz2), and it's a little bit problematic. _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

If someone is interested, I've tweaked OpenKiosk framework (openkiosk.sourceforge.net) to reflect my needings. I can create a LiveCD with OpenKiosk Client for Internet Café or public zones. Let me know _________________ http://www.sabayon.org |

Hi, thanks for your efforts!
But sadly like someone else a couple of posts before I can't download the iso via http. I tried it 4 times and it always cancels somewhere between 100 and 400 MB. Perhaps anyone has a clue?
Thanks,

I suggest using the bittorrent link instead. It works now and there are currently 4 seeds now and I will continue seeding this all this week. If you're firewalled to bittorrent links open a terminal window and use wget.
Code: | wget http://shark.nauticaltech.com/~lxnay/Gentoo-RR4-LiveCD-2.10.iso
|
If your connection drops you will still have a partial file. You can continue your download with the -c option.
Code: | wget http://shark.nauticaltech.com/~lxnay/Gentoo-RR4-LiveCD-2.10.iso
|

Thanks,
right now I'm stuck on win, cause my notebook's harddrive crashed. In my search for a small & simple download manager I settled for wackget, which says it includes wget for windows. With this program the download succeeded in the first run.
Now I'm off to reboot!

Ok, I'm back from trying your LiveCD. Nice!
Couple of things:
Somehow the framebuffer bootup showed no output. This is on a Toshiba Satellite with a NVidia Geforce Go graphics adapter, which Kanotix and the original Gentoo CD handle nicely with fb. Booting without fb worked, but only takes me into Gnome. (I suppose that with a little grub commandline editing I could disable the fb for a KDE boot).
Being in Gnome for the first time in my life, I tried gnomemeeting, which didn't start due to a gconf error.
Also the Gentoo Handbook opened per default in gedit and showed the raw html code.
I'm very happy I saw KDE 3.3.2 in your preliminary changelog, greatly looking forward to the next release!
It's absolutly cool that you've included cryptsetup, your CD will probably be the only one with X.org that can access my encrypted backup discs! Very nice indeed! (Didn't try it, but just suppose it will work! So I'm going to restore my whole system with your CD when my notebook with a fixed harddrive arrives)
Perhaps another "request": don't you think that the midnight commander would be a useful addition? I use it all the time in different consoles.
Thanks for this cool CD,
Joost |
