I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 5160, and as promised here's a quick review and some system info for anyone considering this or a similar system. As far as installing Gentoo is concerned, everything was pretty straight forward with the 2004.3-r1 universal live cd so I'll take questions as they come instead of posting redundant howto's.

What works out of the box (or with minimal configuring):
- nic
- touch pad
- sound
- misc. function keys like screen brightness
- wireless works with the ndiswrapper. However, I seem to be having system freezes like described on the ndis site. They said there's a patch for a 12k stack for the 2.6.7 kernel, is there a fix like that in gentoo-dev-sources?


What I haven't tried yet:
- firewire: no firewire devices to try
- s-video output: simply haven't bothered to try
- modem

Overall impressions:
With my configuration, the are only a few things I would complain about. The XGA screen isn't too great; go for the SXGA+ if you can. It's heavy; ~8lbs. It's loud when the fan is on. The buttons for the touchpad are a little cheaply done. My left button already seems a little lower than the right one after a couple weeks. Not sure what that "i" button next to the power button does, gotta dig out the documentation.

As far as the soundcard goes, I had to add to my /etc/asound.conf to get it to stop locking up the device. I borrowed this configuration (alsa doc), the one titled Damien, Thursday, April 08, 2004. It's not exactly the same device, but so far it works alright in that I can play mp3s on xmms and still have audio output from something else like xine. I'm sure there's tweaking needed cause once in awhile mp3 output from xmms just gets all screwed up or stops completely.

Hi there!

This is just some more info, posts like yours were very very useful for me when I got my laptop, concretely to decide on NON-BUYIN some other specially linux-problematic laptops.

I have also a 5160, and I have to tell I'm really happy with it.

For the other two things, I can tell:

- S-Video Out: my machine (and I guess yours too) comes with an Nvidia GeForce FX Go 5200 and the 3 video outputs (s-video, laptop panel and vga) work perfectly!. I use it commenting/uncommenting a line like "Option 'ConnectedMonitors' 'TV'" in my xorg.conf file and restarting X to switch between laptop pannel and TV. Of course it's not the most comfortable way to do it (see "Twinview" and other Nvidia related stuff over there to learn easier/better ways...)

- Modem: i get it working perfectly using the slmodem drivers, concretely slamr (slmodem is in portage), lately I'm having some probs with the module 'cause some "unknown symbols" when loading it... but i tried fedora core 2 not much time ago and slmodem did it perfectly.


Other things:
- "It's heavy": Absolutely agree!! :? it's a f##k##g pain in the a## to carry it for long trips!! or to come everyday to work with the machine in your back! :evil:
- "XGA not so good": well, maybe I have to recognize that the other laptops I used in my life were really crappy... 'cause I have to tell when I saw for the 1st time this Dell machine with the XGA I was happily surprised about the quality!
- "loud when fan is on": he## yeah! sometimes u really don't realice how disturbing it can be until the fan stops and u get some peace finally... :x
- "the I button": the Dell guys told me that this button gives you info in M$ Windoze about your battery status... I tried once to get it working but I could not get any keycode from it... and I'm not really a guru in this matter so I gave up...


My short opinion:
It's a cheap machine (dell is selling cheap machines lately), and almost everything works very well in linux without too much tweaking... and this is so great... :D but you have the tipical problems of cheap computers: noisy and heavy. What I really hate is the fact that, at least in Spain, I had to buy a f##k##g windoze XP Home Edition with the computer, there was no chance from Dell to get the laptop without OS...

now for the annoyances (in linux)...biggest one so far is the lcd (or PM i should say), when i shut the lid the lcd stays on..ever so bright, i know there's a script mentioned somewhere here but in all of my experience so far with it, i can only get it to blank the screen (cathode remains on) and doesn't go OFF. another problem is setting up the P4 clock modulation, now that may just be my own ignorance but i haven't been able to get it to work either.

now for general annoyances..in the 5100 and 5150 models (dunno about the 5160) there seems to be a design flaw with the cooling system, my ex-gf has the 5100 and has the same problem with dust collecting quite easily in the copper cooling fins, they get so caked with grime that they can no longer dissipate heat fast enough, the temp. reaches around 80c and shuts down, this can be fixed easily by a can of compressed air or a decent vacuum. now that might not be a design flaw but out of all the laptops i've had, none have collected dust so easily. Heat..now thats def. a problem with this sucker. go ahead and compile kdelibs and kdebase with the heatsink dirty, tell me if it won't burn you...literally (this classifies this laptop not as a notebook, but as a cookbook. weight, i believe this thing weighs in around 6-8lbs, i'm a guy, thats rather light......at first; later it becomes a hassle. The F*CKIN' rubber feet on the bottom, can we have these things stick out any farther? i have already ripped off the front 2 accidently. thats it off the top of my head. other than these minor problems and peeves its a pretty good damned laptop/tabletop/.....stovetop, whatever.

My brightness keys just worked.

I did not test them before installing the nvidia drivers. Installing them fixed some things which I did not expect to be related. For example, Ctrl-Alt-F1 used to give me a 'P' in X but works fine and switches ttys after installing the dirvers. I thought this was a key map problem in X since I could switch properly when not running X and Ctrl-Alt-F1 did not type a 'P'. I don't know how installing nviodia drivers fixed it but it did. Installing them might be worth a try if you haven't already.

I am having trouble getting ACPI to work. No acpi events seem to be generated. I have set up the event rule and script. ACPI loggs that 1 rule is loaded when it starts up. The script is never run though. If I try to cat /proc/acpi/events I get an error message (something like device or file does not exist). I think the DSDT for the inspiron 5160 may be buggy but I can't find one to download and I do not know how to make one myself.

Have either of you got ACPI to work?
