Hi.

I have a fresh install of Gentoo on a new AMD64 (AMD64 3400+, nForce4, PCI-e, SATA). On reboot, I am getting a Kernel panic. There appears to be some sort of stack dump and call trace followed by the message: "<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!".

Any thoughts? I'm not sure what additional information to post. I would post the entire stack dump and call trace, but I don't know how to capture the output during boot (or if it's even possible)!? The call trace shows what I assume are function calls, such as "notifier_call_chain", "powernowk8_target", and "cpu_freq_governor_performance".

FYI, I used genkernel and could certainly post my kernel .config file if needed.

Thanks.

Ok. I just ran "genkernel --menuconfig all" and removed support for cpu frequency scaling. Problem solved.

which fs do you use?
check your grub conf file.
And pay more attention to the part of genkerenel in handbook.
Did you emerge coldplug and hotplug, and add to boot level init?

I'm in similar situation, have a brand new (conservative box) AMD64 3000, Sata Drive with Asus AV8, and constantly getting this error message:
Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interupt handler.

Removing "cpu frequency scaling" support did not help in my case.

Yes, in my case it was memory stick problem. And the only test that worked was RedHat memtest.sh - Google for it
