Hello everyone!
I would like to announce a new ebuild for KNetStats-1.3.
Description
KNetStats is a very fine (read: small and simple) network monitoring applet for KDE.
All credits should go to the KNetStat's author, Hugo Parente Lima, who wrote this program.
See the following sites to get a quick overview of what it is and how it looks:
http://knetstats.sourceforge.net/
http://rootprompt.org/article.php3?article=8294 (this one is a review based on version 1.2)
It is a known fact that there is already similar tool. It's called KNemo (KDE Network Monitor).
KNetStats is not rivaling with KNemo, it just fills completely different niche. One thing
distinguishes the two tools, however. KNemo is an KDED service, whereas KNetStats is
simple and plain tray applet.
For now I tested the program for about two months on x86 and amd64 Gentoo installations.
Because it worked without any problem, I wanted to use emerge to install it on my system.
So I created an ebuild for it (my first one!). Big thanks go to alexandre_parente, who put
original ebuild of its own on the forums: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-277343.html
Assuming that this rather small applet should compile on many different platforms, I've put
many ~<arch> keywords in the ebuild. If you find any problem on your platform, please
post it here or send the original author an information. Contrary, if you find no problem on
your platform, you can freely remove ~<arch> keword in favor of <arch> keyword.
You can also post such good news here, so I will be able to update the .ebuild file.
Installation
If you want to use KNetStats, you can download the .ebuild file from:
http://ics.p.lodz.pl/~wiktorw/knetstats/knetstats-1.3.ebuild
Because this is an unofficial .ebuild, for now you should use PORTDIR_OVERLAY setting
in your /etc/make.conf file. Or better, read the small instruction at:
http://ics.p.lodz.pl/~wiktorw/knetstats/INSTRUCTION
You may also need to consult the 5th chapter '5. Diverting from the Official Tree' in
the 'Working with Portage' section of the Gentoo Handbook. For x86 it can be found at:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=3&chap=5
Dislaimer
All the above are only my opinions. The original author is not responsible for them.
So in any case don't flame him nor blame him. Send the flames to /dev/null
Good luck!
